UN Regulation No. 39 (ECE R39) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of vehicles with regard to the speedometer and odometer equipment including its installation.

For vehicles of categories X and Y, an on-board odometer is required, but a speedometer is optional and need not meet this Regulation.

Legibility by day and night is not required for a speedometer in a Field of Vision Assistant (FVA) compliant with Regulation No. 125 or 176.

New paragraph 5.8. sets a ±4.0 per cent limit for the total distance indicated against the true distance travelled in the Annex 4 test.
