UN R120 Supplement 1 (02 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 120 (ECE R120) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of internal combustion engines to be installed in agricultural and forestry tractors and in non-road mobile machinery, with regard to the measurement of the net power, net torque and specific fuel consumption.

UN R120 — Supplement 1 to the 02 series of amendments

Base text → Supplement 1

Adopted at the WP.29 193rd sessionEntry into force 2025-01-10
What changed
  • Hydrogen is now item (g) in the reference fuel list of paragraph 5.2.3., and new paragraph 3.3. of Annex 7 gives a table for hydrogen.
  • New paragraph 5.4.2.1.3. covers a turbocharged engine fitted with a system which allows compensating the ambient conditions temperature and altitude. At the request of the manufacturer, the correction factor αa or αd is then set to the value of 1.
  • Fuel entries in Annex 1, Appendix A1, in Annex 2 and in Annex 5 now list hydrogen.
Why
  • The proposal aims to permit hydrogen (H2) as fuel for approval of internal combustion engines in agricultural and forestry tractors and non-road mobile machinery.
  • The proposal also fixes spelling and typographic errors.

Q1What changed20 changes

Hydrogen as a reference fuel (para. 5.2.3. and Annex 7, para. 3.3.)

Hydrogen is now item (g) in the list of reference fuels or fuel combinations in paragraph 5.2.3. Item (f) “Ethanol” now ends with “;” instead of “.”. New paragraph 3.3. of Annex 7 gives a table for the hydrogen reference fuel, with limits for the hydrogen fuel index and for non-hydrogen gases. The table gives values such as 99.97 % for the hydrogen fuel index and 300 μmol/mol for total non-hydrogen gases. Under note 5 to the table, the test method must be documented, and test methods defined in ISO21087 are preferable. Under note 6, the manufacturer must give the approval authority reasons for exempting specific contaminants.

Hydrogen in fuel entries (Annex 1, Appendix A1; Annex 2; Annex 2, Appendix A.1; Annex 5)

In Annex 1, Appendix A1, paragraphs 2.8.1. and 3.14.1. now list hydrogen, and so does paragraph 2.8.1. of Annex 2. In Annex 5, hydrogen is now item (g) of the fuel type list in paragraph 2.3.6. In the test report of Annex 2, Appendix A.1, new paragraphs 4.5. to 4.5.3. add the entries “Gaseous fuel - Hydrogen”, “Make”, “Type” and “Grade”. The entries for the dual-fuel engine and the gas energy ratio are now numbered 4.6. and 4.6.1. instead of 4.5. and 4.5.1.

Correction factor αa or αd for turbocharged engines (para. 5.4.2.1.3.)

New paragraph 5.4.2.1.3. applies when a turbocharged engine is fitted with a system which allows compensating the ambient conditions temperature and altitude. In this case, at the request of the manufacturer, the correction factor αa or αd must be set to the value of 1.

When a turbocharged engine is fitted with a system which allows compensating the ambient conditions temperature and altitude, at the request of the manufacturer, the correction factor αa or αd shall be set to the value of 1.

Net power test runs and spelling (para. 5.2.1.; Annex 4, para. 3.10.)

Paragraph 5.2.1. now lists the run at fixed full load fuel-injection-pump setting for mechanically controlled compression ignition engines as a separate item (b). Before, item (a) gave this run together with the run at full throttle for mechanically controlled positive ignition engines. The run for electronically controlled engines is now item (c) instead of (b). The words “consist of either” now end with “:”. In Annex 4, paragraph 3.10. now reads “assembly” instead of “assemby”.

The net power test shall consist of either:
A run at full throttle for mechanically controlled positive ignition engines a run fixed full load fuel injection pump setting for mechanically controlled compression ignition engines; or
