New paragraph at the end of the introduction

A new paragraph at the end of the introduction says that the regulation is amended to account for vehicles equipped with Automated Driving Systems (ADS). It says that LDWS are only required to operate when a driver is in control. It also says that vehicles of Categories X and Y (without the ability to be controlled by a driver) are not required to comply. For vehicles equipped with an ADS other than Categories X and Y, no special provisions or exemptions apply in the manual driving mode.

In Supplement 1 to the 01 series of amendments, the regulation is amended to account for vehicles equipped with Automated Driving Systems (ADS). Recognizing the need for different arrangements for vehicles fitted with an ADS, this regulation has been amended to clarify that LDWS are only required to operate when a driver is in control, and that vehicles without the ability to be controlled by a driver (vehicles of Categories X and Y) are not required to comply with this regulation. These changes are made based on the assumption that ADS vehicles must have good perception of the edges of the driving lane and be able to maintain the vehicle within the lane. In the case of vehicles equipped with an ADS other than vehicles of Categories X and Y, in the manual driving mode no special provisions or exemptions apply.

Q2Why it changed

Proposed by
Task force on regulatory fitness for Automated Driving Systems
Working party
GRVA, 24th session (January 2026)

Reasons

  • Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) is a driver assistance feature. For this reason, it has no role while an ADS is performing the Dynamic Driving Task (DDT).

    Source
“Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) is a driver assistance feature and therefore has no role whilst an ADS is performing the Dynamic Driving Task (DDT).”
  • Because LDWS has no role while an ADS performs the DDT, the Regulation is not applicable to vehicles of Categories X and Y. The proposal describes these as vehicles with a manual driving capability only below 6 km/h.

“For this reason, this regulation is not applicable for vehicles of Categories X and Y (i.e. with a manual driving capability only below 6 km/h)”
  • The new provisions are to make sure that the LDWS function is disabled whenever an ADS feature is active. They are also to make sure that it is reinstated when the ADS feature is deactivated. This is when a driver has taken over performance of the DDT. The warning normally given to the driver that LDWS is switched off is not required while the ADS performs the DDT.

“The warning normally given to inform the driver that LDWS function has been switched off is not required when the ADS is performing the DDT.”
  • If one ADS feature is deactivated at the same time as another ADS feature is activated, paragraph 5.6.1. takes precedence. In this case, it is not expected to reinstate LDWS.

  • The proposal says that the term “ADS Feature” should be understood to include the Automated Lane Keeping System (ALKS).

  • Check whether your vehicle types are of Categories X and Y. This Regulation does not apply to them.
  • For vehicles equipped with an ADS, make sure that the LDWS function is deactivated upon activation of an ADS feature.
  • For vehicles equipped with an ADS, make sure the LDWS function cannot be activated while an ADS feature is active.
  • For vehicles equipped with an ADS, make sure the LDWS function is automatically reinstated upon deactivation of an ADS feature.

Component supplier

  • In vehicles equipped with an ADS, be ready for LDWS deactivation upon activation of an ADS feature.

Technical service / Approval authority

  • For vehicles equipped with an ADS, check that the LDWS function is deactivated upon activation of an ADS feature.
  • For vehicles equipped with an ADS, check that the LDWS function is automatically reinstated upon deactivation of an ADS feature.
  • Note that the provisions of paragraph 5.3. do not apply while an ADS feature is active.
