UN R144 — Supplement 2 to the 01 series of amendments

Supplement 1 → 2

Adopted at the WP.29 199th sessionEntry into force not yet known
What changed
  • This Regulation now does not apply to manual triggering of the AECS while both an ADSF-2 is active, and the vehicle is not carrying passengers. Vehicles of category Y are now excluded from its scope.
  • For vehicles equipped with an ADSF-2, the AECS control must be installed so as to be readily accessible by the occupants (if applicable) (para. 26.4.1.). Paragraph 35.6.1. says the same “(as applicable)”.
  • Under paragraph 26.6., the AECS must provide sufficient voice intelligibility for the vehicle driver, or in case of ADSF-2 vehicles, for the passengers (if applicable). Paragraph 35.8. says “for the occupants” instead.
Why
  • Supplement 2 to the 01 series of amendments is introduced to take into account vehicles of category X. It is also introduced to take into account other vehicles which are equipped with an Automated Driving System (ADS).
  • In the absence of occupants in the vehicle, there is no need to fulfil any of the requirements of this UN Regulation. Therefore, vehicles of categories Y are exempted from the scope of this Regulation.
  • Paragraphs 26.4.1. and 35.6.1. were updated to make sure the control is accessible by the occupants. This does not mean that all occupants, for example small children, must be able to access the controls.

New Introduction on vehicles of category X and vehicles with an ADS (paras 0. to 0.1.2.)

Supplement 2 is introduced to take into account vehicles of category X and other vehicles equipped with an Automated Driving System (ADS) (para. 0.1.). Paragraph 0.1.1. says that the UN Regulation was originally drafted for vehicles with a driver and manual driving controls. In the absence of occupants in the vehicle, there is no need to fulfil any of its requirements. Therefore, vehicles of categories Y are exempted from the scope of this Regulation. For vehicles equipped with an ADS other than vehicles of category X, no special provisions or exemptions apply in the manual driving mode (para. 0.1.2.). In a mode where an ADS feature is active, the relevant ADS requirements have to be fulfilled.

When the CCU is not part of the AECD, this requirement is deemed to be fulfilled if two conditions are both met. The second condition now says that the warning strategy on AECD is explained to the driver or ADS user(s) (as applicable). Before, it said “explained to the driver”.
