UN R177 — Supplement 1 to the 01 series of amendments

Base text → Supplement 1

Adopted at the WP.29 199th sessionEntry into force not yet known
What changed
  • Vehicles of categories X and Y must be tested in the ADS testing mode of UN Regulation No. 154. Where necessary, the mode must be extended for the TP1 and TP2 tests and for “the determination of the speed of maximum power”.
  • Paragraphs 3.4.1. and 3.5.4. now use “user-selectable” instead of “driver-selectable”. Paragraphs 3.5.5. and 3.5.6. now use “acceleration demand” instead of “accelerator pedal command”.
  • In Table 2, the accuracy of the force transducer must now be “at least ±10 N or ±0.1% of full scale force, whichever is greater, for all measured increments”.
Why
  • The proposal introduces changes that are needed to include vehicles with Automated Driving Systems in the existing Regulation.
  • Testing vehicles equipped with an ADS might require special procedures. Therefore, provisions are added to allow testing of ADS vehicles on the dynamometer with the ADS test mode described in UN Regulation No. 154.
  • Vehicles of categories X and Y might not have gear change or accelerator controls, so the provisions are generalized to include vehicles without such controls.

Q1What changed32 changes

ADS testing mode (para. 8.1.2.) and new terms “ADS user” and “vehicle user” (paras. 3.4.2. and 3.4.3.)

Vehicles of categories X and Y must be tested in the ADS testing mode of paragraph 2.4.2.7. of Annex B6 to UN Regulation No. 154. Where necessary, the mode must be extended for the TP1 and TP2 tests and for “the determination of the speed of maximum power set out in Annex 5 of this regulation”. If the vehicle is equipped with an ADS testing mode, it must be engaged for “all tests of TP1 or TP2 and determination of speed of maximum power, where an ADS feature is active”. New paragraph 3.4.2. defines “ADS user” as “a human user of an Automated Driving System, as defined in UN Regulation No. [ADS]”. New paragraph 3.4.3. says that “vehicle user” means “in the context of this Regulation a driver or ADS user”. A new footnote says “As defined in the Consolidated Resolution on the Construction of Vehicles (R.E.3.), document ECE/TRANS/WP.29/78/Rev.8”.

Vehicles of categories X and Y shall be tested using the ADS testing mode as set out in paragraph 2.4.2.7. of Annex B6 to UN Regulation No. 154, but extended to enable the correct execution of the TP1 and TP2 tests and the determination of the speed of maximum power set out in Annex 5 of this regulation, where necessary.
If the vehicle is equipped with an ADS testing mode, it shall be engaged for all tests of TP1 or TP2 and determination of speed of maximum power, where an ADS feature is active.

“User-selectable” instead of “driver-selectable” (paras. 3.4.1. and 3.5.4.)

Paragraph 3.4.1. now defines “User-selectable mode” instead of “Driver-selectable mode”, and speaks of a “vehicle user-selectable condition” instead of a “driver-selectable condition”. Paragraph 3.5.4. now says “user-selectable mode” instead of “driver-selectable mode”. In paragraph 8.8.5., “driver-selectable modes” is now “user-selectable modes”. If the gearbox has user-selectable gears, the gear must be selected as recommended by the manufacturer to achieve maximum power; the words “for a typical driver” are deleted. Gear shifting by special modes or actions that are not available to a typical vehicle user, instead of a typical driver, is not permitted.

"Driver-selectable User-selectable mode" means a distinct driver-selectable vehicle user-selectable condition which could affect emissions, or fuel and/or energy consumption, or maximum system power output.
"Power-rating mode" means the driver-selectable user-selectable mode (if any) for which a vehicle system power rating is desired.

“Acceleration demand” instead of “accelerator pedal command” (paras. 3.5.5. and 3.5.6.)

Paragraph 3.5.5. now says “maximum acceleration demand” instead of “maximum accelerator pedal command”. Paragraph 3.5.6. now says “maximum acceleration demand command” instead of “maximum accelerator pedal command”. Measurements common to both TP1 and TP2 now include “acceleration demand” instead of “accelerator pedal command”. The maximum acceleration demand must be given “by either the pedal position or by vehicle communication network for a duration of at least 10 s”. The 10-second measurement time window begins “when the acceleration demand has reached maximum as indicated by the acceleration demand measurement, and the gear ratio (if changed) has begun a period in which it is constant for at least 10 seconds”.

"Speed of maximum power" means the fixed speed setting of the dynamometer at which a maximum accelerator pedal commandacceleration demand, given for a period of at least ten seconds while the vehicle is in power-rating mode, delivers the greatest peak power to the dynamometer.
"Maximum power condition" means the condition in which the vehicle is operating on a dynamometer, the vehicle is in power-rating mode, the dynamometer is operating in fixed speed mode set to the speed of maximum power, and the maximum accelerator pedal acceleration demand command is given for a period of at least ten seconds.

Measurement items and accuracy in Table 2 (para. 7.2.1.)

For chassis dynamometer force, the accuracy of the force transducer must be “at least ±10 N or ±0.1% of full scale force, whichever is greater, for all measured increments”. Before this supplement, it had to be at least ±10 N for all measured increments. For intake manifold pressure, Table 2 now gives “± 2 % or from onboard intake manifold pressure signal” instead of “± 2 %”. The item “Accelerator pedal command” is now “Acceleration demand”, and its remark is now “As read from onboard acceleration demand signal”.

± 2 % Accelerator pedal command ± 2 % or from onboard intake manifold pressure signal The accuracy of the force transducer shall be at least ±10 N or ±0.1% of full scale force, whichever is greater, for all measured increments. This shall be verified upon initial installation, after major maintenance and within 370 days before testing. Acceleration demand As read from onboard accelerator pedal command acceleration demand signal

Powertrain warnings during the test and vehicle conditioning (para. 8.8.3.)

The test must be stopped immediately “if one or more warning indication(s) with regard to the powertrain are activated”. Before this supplement, it had to be stopped immediately “if warning indicator(s) with regard to the powertrain turns on”. The note now gives “engine malfunction indication” instead of “engine check lamp” as an example of a warning. Paragraph 8.8.3. now has the title “Vehicle conditioning” instead of “Vehicle conditioning / System Bench conditioning”. Its text now speaks of “the vehicle” instead of “the vehicle / system”, and of “initial vehicle conditioning”. In the conditioning settings that the vehicle manufacturer or the Type-Approval Authority may change “as necessary to achieve stable operating metrics”, “driver-selectable mode” is now “user-selectable mode”.

The test shall be carried out in accordance with paragraphs ‎8.8.3. to ‎8.8.8., and ‎8.9. to ‎8.11. (see Figure 23). The test shall be stopped immediately if one or more warning indicator(sindication(s) with regard to the powertrain turns onare activated.
Note: Warnings are coolant temperature and engine check lampmalfunction indication, for example.

Entries in Appendices 1 and 2 to Annex 1

In Appendix 1 to Annex 1, paragraph 7.2.2. now reads “In case of TP1, electrical conversion efficiency of the inverter and electric machine or their combination”. Before this supplement, it spoke of “electrical conversion energy”. Paragraph 7.3. of Appendix 1 now says “User-selectable mode switch: Yes/No” instead of “Driver-selectable mode switch: Yes/No”. In the test report table of Appendix 2, item 3.4. now says “if user-selectable gear available” and item 3.6. now says “Acceleration demand … %”. Before, these items said “if driver selectable gear available” and “Accelerator pedal command … %”.

In case of TP1, electrical conversion energy efficiency of the inverter and electric machine or their combination according to ISO 21782, SAE J2907, or equivalent Driver-selectable User-selectable mode switch: Yes/No 2)

  • Proposer's reason (informal document GRPE-94-54)

The updated text aims to apply the same proposed amendments as the GTR21 Phase 3 working document ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRPE/2026/4 of the IWG on EVE. These include improvements to the measurement accuracy requirements for chassis dynamometer driving forces in system power tests for high-performance vehicles. They also include clarification of table footnotes in the annex on approval of the system bench testing facility by the Type-Approval Authority. In addition, the document provides a correction of the requirements for intake manifold pressure. It also provides a correction to replace “energy” with “efficiency” in paragraph 7.2.2. of Appendix 1 to Annex 1.

Submitted by Experts from Japan and the European Commission. Working party adoption: ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRPE/94, para. 46.
