UN R42 Supplement 2 (00 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 42 (ECE R42) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of vehicles with regard to their front and rear protective devices (bumpers, etc.).

UN R42 — Supplement 2 to the 00 series of amendments

Supplement 1 → 2

Adopted at the WP.29 181st sessionEntry into force 2021-01-03
What changed
  • Paragraph 6.1.5. now says that its requirement does not apply to sensors, cameras, radar devices, etc. being part of driver assist systems.
  • These parts may become damaged, disoriented or broken due to an impact carried out according to Annex 3, “as long as the basic braking and steering performance are still intact”.
Why
  • The expert from the Netherlands prepared the text to explain how to deal with advanced driver assist systems that affect braking and steering requirements.
  • UN Regulation No. 42 originated long before advanced driver assist systems were introduced.
  • The proposer says that paragraph 6.1.5. is fulfilled as long as the basic functionality of braking systems and steering systems is still guaranteed.

Q1What changed1 change

Sensors of driver assist systems after the Annex 3 impact (para. 6.1.5.)

Paragraph 6.1.5. requires that the vehicle's propulsion, suspension (including tyres), steering and braking systems remain in adjustment and operate in a normal manner. A new text says that this requirement does not apply to sensors, cameras, radar devices, etc. being part of driver assist systems. They may become damaged, disoriented or broken due to an impact carried out according to Annex 3, “as long as the basic braking and steering performance are still intact”. Before this supplement, paragraph 6.1.5. did not have this text on driver assist systems.

This requirement does not apply to sensors, cameras, radar devices, etc. being part of driver assist systems. They may become damaged, disoriented or broken due to an impact carried out according to Annex 3 as long as the basic braking and steering performance are still intact.

Reasons

  • UN Regulation No. 42 originated long before advanced driver assist systems were introduced. Paragraph 6.1.5. states that the steering and braking systems must remain in adjustment and must operate in a normal manner.

“UN Regulation No. 42 originated long before advanced driver assist systems were introduced.”
“The requirement in paragraph 6.1.5. states that the steering and braking systems shall remain in adjustment and shall operate in a normal manner.”
  • Damage, disorientation and breakage of sensors being part of driver assist systems is covered under the requirements of other UN Regulations. These are Annex 8 to UN Regulation No. 13-H, Annex 18 to UN Regulation No. 13 and Annex 6 to UN Regulation No. 79. These requirements basically make sure that any possible error in the system does not lead to dangerous or unexpected behaviour of the vehicle.

  • Paragraph 6.1.5. is fulfilled as long as the basic functionality of braking systems and steering systems is still guaranteed. Examples are the Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Stability Control and the alignment of the wheels. The proposer gives an example of a sensor failure that would result in the assisted parking mode not functioning anymore. Such a failure should therefore be excluded from the requirements under UN Regulation No. 42.

Q3Who is affected

Vehicle manufacturer

  • Make sure the “basic braking and steering performance” are intact if an Annex 3 impact damages, disorients or breaks driver assist “sensors, cameras, radar devices, etc.”

Component supplier

  • No direct action for this role.

Technical service / Approval authority

  • If an Annex 3 impact damages, disorients or breaks driver assist “sensors, cameras, radar devices, etc.”, check that the “basic braking and steering performance” are intact.
