UN R53 Supplement 2 (03 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 53 (ECE R53) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of category L3 vehicles with regard to the installation of lighting and light-signalling devices.

UN R53 — Supplement 2 to the 03 series of amendments

Supplement 1 → 2

Adopted at the WP.29 186th sessionEntry into force 2022-10-08
What changed
  • Paragraph 6.6.7. covers a front position lamp reciprocally incorporated with a direction indicator. The front position lamp on the relevant side, or its reciprocally incorporated part, must be OFF during the entire operation of the direction indicator lamp.
  • This includes both the ON and OFF cycle of the direction indicator lamp. Before, the position lamp on the same side had to be switched off when the direction indicator lamp was flashing.
Why
  • The proposal aims to clarify the electrical connection requirements for a white front position lamp reciprocally incorporated with a direction indicator.
  • The proposal says the old text required the entire white front position lamp to be extinguished during direction indicator operation. This may reduce the motorcycle conspicuity.
  • The amendments to the proposal aim to make sure that other road users adequately notice the motorcycle direction indicator.

Q1What changed1 change

Front position lamp reciprocally incorporated with a direction indicator (para. 6.6.7.)

Paragraph 6.6.7. applies if a front position lamp is reciprocally incorporated with a direction indicator. The electrical connection must switch OFF the front position lamp on the relevant side, or the reciprocally incorporated part of it, during direction indicator operation. This applies during the entire time (both ON and OFF cycle) of operation of the direction indicator lamp. Before, the position lamp on the same side as the direction indicator lamp had to be switched off when the direction indicator lamp was flashing.

When the front position lamp is reciprocally incorporated in the front direction indicator lamp, the electrical connection shall be such that the position lamp on the same side as the direction indicator lamp is switched off when the direction indicator lamp is flashing. If a front position lamp is reciprocally incorporated with a direction indicator, the electrical connection of the front position lamp on the relevant side of the vehicle or the reciprocally incorporated part of it shall be such that it is switched OFF during the entire time (both ON and OFF cycle) of operation of the direction indicator lamp.

Q2Why it changed

Proposed by
Expert from the International Motorcycle Manufacturers Association
Working party
GRE, 85th session (October 2021)

Reasons

  • The proposal aims to clarify the electrical connection requirements for a white front position lamp reciprocally incorporated with a direction indicator. It also aims to align the wording with those for vehicles of category M and N in UN Regulation No. 48. The proposal says these requirements were inadvertently altered with the introduction of amber front position lamps for motorcycles.

“The objective of this proposal is to clarify the electrical connection requirements for a white front position lamp reciprocally incorporated with a direction indicator”
“to align the wording with those for vehicles of category M and N in UN Regulation No. 48, as they were inadvertently altered with the introduction of amber front position lamps for motorcycles.”
  • In Supplement 12 to the 01 series, paragraph 6.6.7. was fully aligned with UN Regulation No. 48. In the discussion of another proposal to introduce amber front position lamps (later Supplement 13 to the 01 series), GRE agreed to amend paragraph 6.6.7. The aim was to prevent an amber front position lamp reciprocally incorporated with a direction indicator from being lit during direction indicator operation. Both lamps would have the same colour.

“Supplement 12 to the 01 series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 53 (ECE/TRANS/WP.29/2010/98), paragraph 6.6.7. was fully aligned with UN Regulation No. 48.”
“In the discussion, GRE agreed to amend paragraph 6.6.7. to prevent an amber front position lamp reciprocally incorporated with a direction indicator to be lit during the operation of the direction indicator, as both lamps would have the same colour”
  • The wording of Supplement 13 did not consider a widespread white front position lamp with both lateral ends partially reciprocally incorporated with direction indicators. The proposal says the old text required the entire white front position lamp to be extinguished during the operation of the direction indicator. This may reduce the motorcycle conspicuity.

“the wording employed in Supplement 13 did not consider the possibility of a widespread white front position lamp that has both lateral ends partially reciprocally incorporated with direction indicators”
“the current text requires the entire white front position lamp to be extinguished during the operation of the direction indicator, which may reduce the motorcycle conspicuity”
  • To rectify the situation, the proposal aims to fully realign the requirement for white front position lamps with UN Regulation No. 48. For the widespread white front position lamp, the remaining part of the front position lamp could then be kept ON, enhancing the motorcycle conspicuity.

“To rectify the situation, IMMA proposes to fully realign the requirement for white front position lamps with UN Regulation No. 48.”
“In the case of the abovementioned widespread white front position lamp, the remaining part of the front position lamp could be kept ON, enhancing the motorcycle conspicuity”
  • Proposer's reason (informal document GRE-85-27)

The amendments to working document GRE/2021/23 aim to make sure that other road users adequately notice the motorcycle direction indicator. They aim to do this by clarifying the intended behaviour of the reciprocally incorporated part and by preventing other activation possibilities. They also aim to streamline the wording of paragraph 6.6.7.

Submitted by the experts from IMMA and the United Kingdom. Working party adoption: ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRE/85, para. 37.
