UN R124 Supplement 3 (00 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 124 (ECE R124) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of wheels for passenger cars and their trailers.

UN R124 — Supplement 3 to the 00 series of amendments

Supplement 2 → 3

Adopted at the WP.29 184th sessionEntry into force 2022-01-07
What changed
  • The Regulation does not apply to wheels with less than three-wheel fixing components (studs or nuts) which are not identical replacement wheels.
  • If a type comprises more than two versions with different PCD, versions with a PCD difference > 6,5 mm to a tested version need additional tests.
  • As an alternative to paragraph 6.5.1.1. tests, the endurance life of replica replacement wheels can be proven in comparison to the vehicle manufacturer's replacement wheels.
Why
  • Due to lack of test procedures, special wheel attachment systems, such as central lock wheel nuts, have to be excluded from the scope.
  • For safety reasons, the PCD difference between tested and untested versions has to be restricted.
  • Replica wheels need to achieve at minimum the level of the vehicle manufacturer's replacement wheels.

Q1What changed7 changes

Wheels with less than three-wheel fixing components (para. 1.)

The Regulation does not apply to wheels with less than three-wheel fixing components (studs or nuts) which are not identical replacement wheels. Before this supplement, paragraph 1. did not have this exclusion. The sentence on the vehicle categories that the Regulation covers now ends with a full stop.

It does not apply to wheels with less than three-wheel fixing components (studs or nuts) which are not identical replacement wheels.
This Regulation covers new replacement wheels designed for vehicles of categories M1, M1G, N1, N1G, O1 and O2.

Additional tests on versions with a different PCD (Annex 6, para. 4.)

The table in paragraph 4. of Annex 6 has new rows for a type that comprises more than two versions with different PCD. These rows ask for additional tests on each version with a PCD different to a tested version. For a PCD difference to a tested version > 6,5 mm, the short test and the long test each need 1 wheel. For a PCD difference to a tested version ≤ 6,5 mm, the table gives “-” for both tests. Before this supplement, the table had no rows for versions with a PCD different to a tested version. The row “Inset variations up to 2 mm” now reads “Insert variation up to 2 mm”.

Comparison with the vehicle manufacturer's replacement wheels (para. 6.5.)

Paragraph 6.5. gives an alternative to the test specifications in paragraph 6.5.1.1. for replica replacement wheels. Their endurance life can be proven in comparison to the endurance life of the vehicle manufacturer's replacement wheels. The rotation bending tests on two load levels must be performed according to Annex 6, and the rolling test according to Annex 7. These tests must always compare the replica replacement wheels with the vehicle manufacturer's replacement wheels, until the required limits or failure of the wheels. Replica replacement wheels must achieve in every level at least the results or better of the vehicle manufacturer's replacement wheels. Before this supplement, paragraph 6.5. did not have these provisions.

As an alternative to the test specifications in paragraph 6.5.1.1., the endurance life of replica replacement wheels can be proven in comparison to the endurance life of the vehicle manufacturer's replacement wheels.
The rotation bending tests on two load levels have to be performed according Annex 6 as well as rolling test according to Annex 7. These tests have always to be performed in comparison of the replica replacement wheels to the vehicle manufacturer's replacement wheels until the required limits or failure of the wheels.

Test requirements of the vehicle manufacturer (para. 6.5.)

The test requirements of the vehicle manufacturer for the vehicle manufacturer's replacement wheels can be applied instead of test requirement 6.5.1.1. These testing requirements must be disclosed to enable the verifiability. The assignment to the wheel load released by the vehicle manufacturer must be given. Before this supplement, paragraph 6.5. did not have this option.

Reasons

  • The text was prepared to adapt UN Regulation No. 124 to the current requirements for granting of type approvals.

“in order to adapt UN Regulation No. 124 to the current requirements for granting of type approvals”
“proposed amendments with a view to adapting UN Regulation No. 124 to the current requirements for type approvals”
  • The Regulation does not describe suitable procedures to assess the relevant characteristics of special wheel attachments, such as central lock wheel nuts. Due to lack of test procedures, special wheel attachment systems have to be excluded from the scope.

“The current Regulation does not describe any suitable procedures to assess the relevant characteristics of special wheel attachments (such as central lock wheel nuts).”
“Due to lack of test procedures, special wheel attachment systems have to be excluded from the scope of the Regulation.”
  • A wide difference of PCD of the tested versions may result in a wide difference of PCD between tested and untested versions. For safety reasons, that difference has to be restricted. The value of 6.5 mm is taken from the German national regulation regarding type approvals for special wheels.

“A wide difference of PCD of the tested versions may result in a wide difference of PCD of tested and untested versions.”
“For safety reasons, it is necessary to restrict that difference.”
“The value of 6.5 mm is taken from the German national regulation regarding type approvals for special wheels.”
  • Replica wheels need to achieve at minimum the level of the vehicle manufacturer's replacement wheels. The comparative test verifies this minimum performance level.

Q3Who is affected

Vehicle manufacturer

  • No direct action for this role.

Component supplier

  • Make sure wheels you submit under this Regulation have three or more fixing components, unless they are identical replacement wheels.
  • If a type comprises more than two versions with different PCD, be ready for tests under the new row “PCD difference to a tested version > 6,5 mm”.
  • For the comparison alternative, make sure replica wheels achieve at least the vehicle manufacturer's replacement wheel results in every level.

Technical service / Approval authority

  • If a type comprises more than two versions with different PCD, apply the new row “PCD difference to a tested version > 6,5 mm”.
  • For the comparison alternative, test replica wheels against the vehicle manufacturer's replacement wheels until the required limits or wheel failure.
  • If vehicle manufacturer test requirements are applied instead of 6.5.1.1., check their disclosure and assignment to the released wheel load.
