UN R152 Supplement 1 (02 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 152 (ECE R152) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of motor vehicles with regard to the Advanced Emergency Braking System (AEBS) for M1 and N1 vehicles.

UN R152 — Supplement 1 to the 02 series of amendments

Base text → Supplement 1

Adopted at the WP.29 185th sessionEntry into force 2022-06-22
What changed
  • If the AEBS function can be manually deactivated, it must be automatically reinstated at the initiation of each new “engine start/run cycle”, not “ignition cycle”. This requirement does not apply when a new engine start/run cycle is performed automatically, for example the operation of a stop/start system.
  • Paragraph 5.1.2. now refers to the 06 series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 10, instead of the 05 series. Its technical requirements and transitional provisions are used to demonstrate that magnetic or electrical fields do not adversely affect the effectiveness of AEBS.
  • The rule on a system not initialised after 15 seconds of cumulative driving above 10km/h is transferred from paragraph 5.1.4.1.2. to a new paragraph 5.1.4.2.
Why
  • Electric vehicles no longer have an “ignition” cycle, and many vehicles have an integrated stop/start system to increase fuel efficiency.
  • An AEBS that, at start-up of the vehicle, is not ready to operate within a certain period of time is not yet considered a failure.
  • The word “and” was eliminated, most probably by mistake, and it makes a link between all the conditions (a) to (g) listed in paragraph 5.2.1.4.

Q1What changed7 changes

Reinstatement of the AEBS function at each new engine start/run cycle (para. 5.4.1.1.)

Paragraph 5.4.1.1. now says “engine start/run cycle” instead of “ignition cycle”. If the AEBS function can be manually deactivated, it must be automatically reinstated at the initiation of each new engine start/run cycle. A new sentence adds an exception for a new engine start/run cycle performed automatically, for example the operation of a stop/start system.

The AEBS function shall be automatically reinstated at the initiation of each new ignition engine start/run cycle.
This requirement does not apply when a new engine start/run cycle is performed automatically, e.g. the operation of a stop/start system.

Reference to the 06 series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 10 (para. 5.1.2.)

Paragraph 5.1.2. now refers to the 06 series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 10, instead of the 05 series. The effectiveness of AEBS must not be adversely affected by magnetic or electrical fields. This must be demonstrated by fulfilling the technical requirements and respecting the transitional provisions of that series.

The effectiveness of AEBS shall not be adversely affected by magnetic or electrical fields. This shall be demonstrated by fulfilling the technical requirements and respecting the transitional provisions of the 05 06 series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 10.

Initialisation information in a separate paragraph (paras 5.1.4.1.2., 5.1.4.2. and 5.1.4.3.)

The rule on a system not initialised after 15 seconds of cumulative driving above 10km/h is transferred from paragraph 5.1.4.1.2. to a new paragraph 5.1.4.2. Paragraph 5.1.4.1.2. now holds the requirement to illuminate the warning signal as defined in paragraph 5.1.4.1. upon detection of any non-electrical failure condition. The wording of both requirements is not changed. The deactivation warning is now in paragraph 5.1.4.3.

If the system has not been initialised after a cumulative driving time of 15 seconds above a speed of 10km/h, information of this status shall be indicated to the driver. This information shall exist until the system has been successfully initialised.Upon detection of any non-electrical failure condition (e.g. sensor blindness or sensor misalignment), the warning signal as defined in paragraph 5.1.4.1. shall be illuminated.
Upon detection of any non-electrical failure condition (e.g. sensor blindness or sensor misalignment), the warning signal as defined in paragraph 5.1.4.1. shall be illuminated. If the system has not been initialised after a cumulative driving time of 15 seconds above a speed of 10km/h, information of this status shall be indicated to the driver. Word “and” at the end of item (f) (para. 5.2.1.4.)

Item (f) in the list of conditions of paragraph 5.2.1.4. now ends with the word “and”. Item (f) is about the absence of weather conditions affecting the dynamic performance of the vehicle, for example no storm, not below 0°C.

Q2Why it changed

Proposed by
Experts of OICA and CLEPA
Working party
GRVA, 10th session (May 2021)

Reasons

Reasons given by the proposer: Experts of OICA and CLEPA, in informal document GRVA-10-03. GRVA requested the secretariat to submit GRVA-10-03, as reproduced in Annex VI, to WP.29 and AC.1 (ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRVA/10, para. 70).

  • Electric vehicles no longer have an “ignition” cycle. Also, many vehicles have an integrated stop/start system to increase fuel efficiency. It should be clarified that the automatic engine restart does not require a reactivation of the AEBS. For this reason, the proposal aims to align the wording with that used in the 03 series of amendments of UN Regulation No. 79.

“Electric vehicles no longer have an “ignition” cycle.”
“Additionally, many vehicles have an integrated stop/start system to increase fuel efficiency.”
“It should be clarified that the automatic engine restart does not require a reactivation of the AEBS.”
“Therefore, the proposal aims to align the wording with that used in the 03 series of amendments of UN Regulation No. 79”
  • The proposal refers to the transitional provisions of the 06 series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 10. Under them, electric and hybrid vehicles with a coupling system to charge the REESS must be type approved to that series from 1 September 2022. For this reason, the manufacturer should be allowed the choice to demonstrate the electromagnetic compatibility of the AEBS using the 06 series.

“According to the transitional provisions of the 06 series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 10”
“all electric and hybrid vehicles (“vehicle type which are equipped with a coupling system to charge the REESS”) have to be type approved according to the 06 series of amendments as from 1 September 2022.”
“Therefore, the manufacturer should be allowed the choice to demonstrate the electromagnetic compatibility of the AEBS using the 06 series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 10.”
  • Paragraph 5.1.4.1.2. was introduced to inform the driver if, at start-up of the vehicle, the AEBS is not ready to operate within a certain period. For example, this can be due to ongoing sensor re-calibration. This is not yet considered a failure. It would turn into a failure if this initialisation was unsuccessful and prevented the AEBS from becoming ready to intervene. The proposal aims to transfer the provisions for indication of ongoing initialisation from a subparagraph on failure indication to a new separate paragraph.

“Par. 5.1.4.1.2. was introduced to ensure the driver is informed if upon start-up of the vehicle the AEBS is not ready to operate within a certain period of time, e.g. due to ongoing sensor re-calibration.”
“This is not yet considered a failure.”
“It would turn into a failure, if this initialisation was unsuccessful and prevent the AEBS from becoming ready to intervene.”
“The aim of this proposal is to reflect this by transferring the provisions for Indication in case of ongoing initialisation from a subparagraph of provisions for failure indication to a new separate paragraph.”
  • The word “and” was eliminated, most probably by mistake, when informal document GRVA-08-16-Rev.1 was produced. It is important to insert this “and” again, because it makes a link between all the conditions (a) to (g) listed in paragraph 5.2.1.4. It means that the AEBS is required to fulfil the performance requirements only when all the listed conditions are combined.
