UN R158 Supplement 3 (00 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 158 (ECE R158) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of devices and motor vehicles with regard to the driver’s awareness of vulnerable road users behind vehicles when reversing.

UN R158 — Supplement 3 to the 00 series of amendments

Supplement 2 → 3

Adopted at the WP.29 192nd sessionEntry into force 2024-09-22
What changed
  • Paragraph 16.1.1.4. permits a temporary change of the view to enable an improved view while manoeuvring. During this temporarily modified view, it is permitted that the requirements on the default view (paragraph 16.1.) and object size (paragraph 16.1.1.) are not fulfilled.
  • For temporary obstruction, paragraph 16.1.3.1. now refers to the conditions in new paragraph 1.3.3.5. of Annex 9.
  • New paragraph 1.3.3.5. of Annex 9 applies to a monitor located behind a temporary obstacle, for example a steering wheel spoke.
Why
  • The aim of the new wording of paragraph 16.1.1.4. is to improve the clarity of the provision, without changing the requirements or adding new provisions.
  • The second section of paragraph 16.1.3.1. accounts for potential temporary obstructions, for example through a rotated steering wheel.
  • The new procedure in Annex 9 uses the driver's ocular points as a basis, to avoid unnecessary complexity of the assessment procedure.

Q1What changed10 changes

Deactivation wording (para. 16.1.1.3.)

Paragraph 16.1.1.3. now says that the view “may” be manually switched off when the vehicle is not moving rearward. Before this supplement, it said “can”. A comma is also added before “or the backing event is finished”.

The rear-view image shall remain visible during the backing event until either, the driver modifies the view, or the vehicle direction selector is no longer in the reverse position , or the backing event is finished.
The view can may be manually switched off when the vehicle is not moving rearward.

Temporary change of view while manoeuvring (para. 16.1.1.4.)

Paragraph 16.1.1.4. permits a temporary change of the view to enable an improved view while manoeuvring, for example when there is a risk of collision. During this temporarily modified view, it is permitted that the requirements on the default view (paragraph 16.1.) and object size (paragraph 16.1.1.) are not fulfilled. It must be demonstrated, to the satisfaction of the Technical Service and Type Approval Authority, that this change of view increases the safety. Before this supplement, the field of view could change and focus on the collision area when there was a risk of collision. It had to be demonstrated to the Technical Service that this change of view increases the safety. The field of view could also change following the vehicle trajectory when the vehicle was not driving straight.

Automatic change of viewTemporarily modified
When there is a risk of collision, the field of view may change and focus on the collision area. It shall be demonstrated to the Technical Service that this change of view increases the safety. To enable an improved view while maneuvering (e.g. when there is a risk of collision, or when the vehicle is not reversing straight), it shall be permitted to temporarily change the view, in such a way that the requirements laid down in paragraphs 16.1. (default view) and 16.1.1. (object size) are not fulfilled during this temporarily modified view.

Monitor visibility and temporary obstruction (para. 16.1.3.1.)

Paragraph 16.1.3.1. now says that “the regulated field of vision displayed on the monitor” must be visible without any obstruction from the ocular reference point. Before this supplement, it said “the monitor defined size”. In case of temporary obstruction, the driver must be able to see the close proximity rear view field of vision under Annex 9, paragraph 1.3.3.5. The words “A virtual testing” also change to “Virtual testing”.

The regulated field of vision displayed on the monitor defined size shall be visible without any obstruction from the ocular reference point. A virtual Virtual testing is acceptable.
In case of temporary obstruction, the driver shall be able to see the close proximity rear view field of vision under the conditions defined in Annex 9 paragraph 1.3.3.5.

Monitor behind a temporary obstacle (Annex 9, para. 1.3.3.5.)

New paragraph 1.3.3.5. of Annex 9 applies to a monitor located behind a temporary obstacle, for example a steering wheel spoke. It says when the close proximity rear view field of vision must be visible to the driver in all normal reversing motion conditions. This is when the driver is restrained by the installed crash protection system, adjusted in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. The driver is also free to move within the constraints of that system, for example head movement. Ambinocular vision from the driver's ocular points is considered. Virtual testing is acceptable.

The close proximity rear view field of vision in case of monitor located behind a temporary obstacle (e.g. a steering wheel spoke):
The close proximity rear view field of vision shall be visible to the driver in all normal reversing motion conditions when the driver is restrained by the installed crash protection system, adjusted in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, and is free to move within constraints of that system (e.g. head movement), and considering ambinocular vision from the driver's ocular points.

Q2Why it changed

Proposed by
Expert from the Informal Working Group on Awareness of Vulnerable Road Users Proximity
Working party
GRSG, 126th session

Reasons

  • The proposal replaces “can” with “may” in paragraph 16.1.1.3. to improve the wording.

    Source
“Furthermore, improvement of the wording is proposed by replacing "can" by "may".”
  • The aim of the new wording of paragraph 16.1.1.4. is to improve the clarity of the provision, without changing the requirements or adding new provisions.

    Source
“The new wording shall improve the clarity of the provision, without changing the requirements or adding new provisions.”
  • The first section of paragraph 16.1.3.1. defines the default condition with the steering wheel in a straight-ahead position. The second section accounts for potential temporary obstructions, for example through a rotated steering wheel. It refers to a newly introduced test procedure under Annex 9.

    Sources (3)
“The first section defines the default condition with the steering wheel in a straight-ahead position, which is the monitor being visible without obstructions from the ocular points.”
“The second section accounts for potential temporary obstructions, e.g. through a rotated steering wheel.”
“This section then refers to a newly introduced test procedure under Annex 9, see below.”
  • The test procedure in paragraph 1.3.3.5. of Annex 9 applies only when the monitor is temporarily obstructed. In that case, the driver's eye is allowed to move to the left or right, but only within the constraints of the restraint system.

    Sources (2)
“This test procedure only applies when the monitor is temporarily obstructed.”
“In such a case the driver’s eye shall be allowed to be moved to the left or right, but only within constraints of the restraint system.”
  • To avoid unnecessary complexity of the assessment procedure, the procedure uses the driver's ocular points as a basis. An assessment for “all possible driver sizes and seating positions”, as proposed in GRSG-125-20, would lead to undefined conditions, because driver sizes and seat adjustment ranges are not regulated.

    Sources (2)
“To avoid unnecessary complexity of the assessment procedure it shall use the driver’s ocular points as a basis.”
“Extending the assessment to "all possible driver sizes and seating positions" as proposed in GRSG-125-20 would lead to undefined conditions, as driver sizes and seat adjustment ranges are not regulated.”
