UN R162 Supplement 3 (00 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 162 (ECE R162) — Uniform technical prescriptions concerning approval of immobilizers and approval of a vehicle with regard to its immobilizer.

UN R162 — Supplement 3 to the 00 series of amendments

Supplement 2 → 3

Adopted at the WP.29 187th sessionEntry into force 2023-01-04
What changed
  • Annex 9, paragraph 4.3.1. now applies to unsetting of the immobilizer instead of unlocking of the device to prevent unauthorized use.
  • The alternative to key detection inside the vehicle changes from detection “in close proximity” to an actuation “triggered by user intent in close proximity”.
  • A new procedure checks the distance limit for unsetting by detection in the vehicle interior, with a 2000 mm tolerance around the vehicle perimeter.
Why
  • The secretariat prepared the text to correct an error in ECE/TRANS/WP.29/2022/29, which WP.29 adopted at its 186th session.
  • The proposal is aimed at re-introducing the original text of Annex 9, paragraph 4.3.1., as adopted by GRSG at its 122nd session.

Q1What changed6 changes

Conditions for unsetting of the immobilizer (Annex 9, para. 4.3.1.)

Paragraph 4.3.1. now says “Unsetting of the immobilizer” instead of “Unlocking of the device to prevent unauthorized use”. Unsetting requires an authorized registered digital key detected in the vehicle interior, or an actuation triggered by user intent in close proximity of the vehicle. Before this supplement, the second alternative was that the key is detected in close proximity of the vehicle.

Unlocking Unsetting of the device to prevent unauthorized use immobilizer shall require that an authorized registered digital key is detected in the interior of the vehicle, or that an actuation is triggered by user intent in close proximity of the vehicle.

New procedure for the distance limitation (Annex 9, para. 4.3.1.)

Paragraph 4.3.1. adds a procedure that checks the limitation of the distance for unsetting of the immobilizer by detection in the interior of the vehicle. The vehicle must be parked in a secure condition in unobstructed free field condition: engine off and all windows, doors and roof closed. The vehicle manufacturer will provide a typical user device for test in agreement with the technical service. The technical service will define four test points around the vehicle perimeter at a distance not less than 2000 mm. The user device is placed at each test point, and the door must be closed while trying to operate the vehicle under its own power. If the vehicle can be operated under its own power at one of the test points, the requirement is not met.

The limitation of the distance for unsetting of the immobilizer by detection in the interior of the vehicle shall be verified using the following procedure including a tolerance of 2000 mm around the vehicle perimeter:
The vehicle shall be parked in a secure condition in unobstructed free field condition, this means engine off and all windows, doors and roof shall be closed.
