UN R26 Supplement 4 (03 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 26 (ECE R26) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of vehicles with regard to their external projections.
UN R26 — Supplement 4 to the 03 series of amendments
Supplement 3 → 4
- What changed
- New text in paragraph 6.8.1. says that the rear edge of the bonnet includes the extrapolation of this edge to the left and right. Examples of this extrapolation in the text are the upper edge of the fender or the edge of the a-pillar.
- This extrapolation is limited laterally by the outermost lateral point of the windscreen glass.
- Paragraph 6.8.1. says that the requirements of paragraph 5.4. do not apply to the rear edge of bonnet and front edge of rear luggage boot.
- Why
- GRSG justified the exemption with an experience-based justification: some sheet metal edges can be considered as not dangerous due to their location.
- The proposal says that this justification is valid in the same way for rear edges of fenders or rear edges of A-pillars. The condition is that they extend from the rear edge of the bonnet to the left and to the right.
Q1What changed1 change
Rear edge of the bonnet and its extrapolation to the left and right (para. 6.8.1.)
Paragraph 6.8.1. says that the requirements of paragraph 5.4. do not apply to the rear edge of bonnet and front edge of rear luggage boot. New text now says that the rear edge of the bonnet includes the extrapolation of this edge to the left and right. Examples of this extrapolation in the text are the upper edge of the fender or the edge of the a-pillar. This extrapolation is limited laterally by the outermost lateral point of the windscreen glass. Before this supplement, the paragraph did not have this text.
Q2Why it changed
- Proposed by
- Expert from the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers
- Working party
- GRSG, 117th session (October 2019)
Reasons
In April 2006, GRSG agreed to amend paragraph 6.8.1. with an exemption from paragraph 5.4. The exemption is for the rear edge of bonnet and front edge of rear luggage boot.

“During its ninetieth session in April 2006, GRSG agreed to amend paragraph 6.8.1.”
“GRSG agreed to amend paragraph 6.8.1. with the last subparagraph: "The requirements of paragraph 5.4. above shall not apply to the following sheet metal edges: rear edge of bonnet and front edge of rear luggage boot"”
GRSG gave an experience-based justification for this exemption. Some sheet metal edges can be considered as not dangerous due to their location (edges not likely to increase the risk of bodily injury).
