Q1What changed1 change
Rear collision: compliance with UN Regulation No. 153 (para. 9.7.)
Under new paragraph 9.7., a vehicle that complies with UN Regulation No. 153 is deemed to meet the requirements of paragraphs 9.6.2. and 9.6.3. Paragraph 9.6.2. requires a vehicle test to the procedures of Annex 4, the procedure for the rear-end collision test. Paragraph 9.6.3. requires that the performance requirements of paragraphs 9.1. to 9.4. of Part II-1 are met after the collision test. Part II-2 covers M1 and N1 vehicles up to 2.8 tonnes total permissible mass, with liquid fuel tanks approved to Part I or IV.

- Expert from the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers
- Working party
- GRSG, 123rd session (March–April 2022)
Reasons
The proposal is part of the process to avoid double approval for rear impact. The process does this by removing the impact tests for M1 and N1 vehicles from UN Regulation No. 34. M1 and N1 vehicles are in the scope of both UN Regulation No. 34 and UN Regulation No. 153.

“This proposal is part of the process to avoid double approval with regard to rear impact by removing the impact tests for M1 and N1 vehicles from UN Regulation No. 34.”
“Those vehicles are indeed in the scope of both UN Regulations Nos. 34 and 153.”
For rear collision, UN Regulation No. 153 was made to address the same test procedure as UN Regulation No. 34. For this reason, it is useful to make clear in the 03 series that approvals to the two regulations are equivalent.

“For the requirements in the event of rear collision, UN Regulation No. 153 has been established to address the same test procedure as that required in UN Regulation No. 34”
“therefore it is beneficial to clarify, in the 03 series of amendment of UN Regulation No. 34, the equivalency of the approvals to each UN Regulation.”
