UN R44 Supplement 17 (04 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 44 (ECE R44) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of restraining devices for child occupants of power-driven vehicles ("Child Restraint Systems").
UN R44 — Supplement 17 to the 04 series of amendments
Supplement 16 → 17
- What changed
- Paragraph 7.1.4.2.2. now identifies the vertical component of the acceleration from the abdomen towards the head as "-z".
- The measurement procedures of paragraph 8.5 follow those of ISO 6487 with SAE J211 sign convention, as shown in new Figure A.
- Why
- The clarification was aimed at consistency in the tests that different Technical Services perform on Child Restraint Systems under paragraph 7.1.4.2.2.
Q1What changed4 changes
Direction and sign convention of the chest vertical acceleration (para. 7.1.4.2.2.)
The vertical component of the acceleration from the abdomen towards the head is now identified as "-z". When the paragraph 8.5 measurement procedures are followed, it must not exceed 30 g except during periods whose sum does not exceed 3 ms. These measurement procedures follow those of ISO 6487 with SAE J211 sign convention, as shown in new Figure A.
Q2Why it changed
- Proposed by
- Expert from the European Association of Automotive Suppliers
- Working party
- GRSP, 65th session (May 2019)
Reasons
At GRSP, the expert from Germany introduced a document to clarify the direction of the vertical component of the chest acceleration. The aim was consistency in the tests that different Technical Services perform on Child Restraint Systems under paragraph 7.1.4.2.2.

“The expert from Germany introduced GRSP-65-20 aimed at introducing clarifications on the direction of the vertical component of the chest acceleration”
“to provide consistency on the test performed by different Technical Services on Child Restraint Systems in accordance to paragraph 7.1.4.2.2. of the UN Regulation”
Proposer's reason (informal document GRSP-65-28)
The clarification addresses the concern raised by Germany (GRSP-65-20) that the assessment was not applied consistently by all test labs. A Child Restraint System passed the paragraph 7.1.4.2.2. test during approval but failed the same test during COP measures. The approval test and the COP measure were not carried out by the same technical services. It clarifies the sign convention of dummy instrumentation so that the correct direction of chest vertical acceleration is measured and assessed in the dynamic test.
Submitted by Expert from the European Association of Automotive Suppliers. Working party adoption: ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRSP/65, para. 25.
