UN R55 — Supplement 9 to the 01 series of amendments

Supplement 8 → 9

Adopted at the WP.29 182nd sessionEntry into force 2021-06-09
What changed
  • Annex 5, paragraph 3.4. now says: “Any flexible components providing part of the articulation are not considered to be a special joint.”
Why
  • When flexible components provide part of the articulation, the earlier wording left room for interpretation.
  • Approval documents of C50 couplings on the market show no Annex 7, paragraph 1.3.8. restriction when flexible components provide part of the articulation.
  • Apparently, the earlier wording has been widely interpreted in the same way as this clarified proposal.

Q1What changed1 change

Flexible components in the articulation and special joints (Annex 5, para. 3.4.)

Annex 5, paragraph 3.4. covers the case where part of the articulation is provided by a special joint (Class C50-X drawbar couplings only). In that case, the field of application in the Annex 1 communication form must be restricted to the cases stated in Annex 7, paragraph 1.3.8. A new sentence in Annex 5, paragraph 3.4. says: “Any flexible components providing part of the articulation are not considered to be a special joint.”

(Class C50-X drawbar couplings only), the field of application, given in the communication form shown in Annex 1, shall be restricted to the cases stated in Annex 7, paragraph 1.3.8. Any flexible components providing part of the articulation are not considered to be a special joint.
