UN R55 Supplement 1 (02 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 55 (ECE R55) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of mechanical coupling components of combinations of vehicles.
UN R55 — Supplement 1 to the 02 series of amendments
Base text → Supplement 1
- What changed
- The form of shank for drawbar eyes of Class D50-X is now limited by the form drawn in Figure 11. Before, it was not specified.
- New paragraph 13.5. covers type approvals of Class D50-X drawbar eyes to the preceding series, notwithstanding paragraph 13.3. Until 1 September 2023, Contracting Parties applying this Regulation must accept these approvals if first issued before 1 September 2021.
- New paragraph 13.6. covers type approvals of Class D50-X drawbar eyes issued to the preceding series, notwithstanding paragraph 13.3. As from 1 September 2023, Contracting Parties applying this Regulation are not obliged to accept them.
- Why
- In Finland, market surveillance found incompatible type-approved drawbar eyes and drawbar couplings.
- A clarified dimensioning of the D50-X shank would make sure that it is compatible with the C50 couplings.
Q1What changed4 changes
Shank form of Class D50-X drawbar eyes (Annex 5, para. 4.1.)
The form of shank for drawbar eyes of Class D50-X is now limited by the form drawn in Figure 11. Before this supplement, the form of shank for Class D50-X drawbar eyes was not specified. As before, Table 6 limits the height “h” and the width “b” for a distance of 210 mm from the centre of the eye.
Type approvals of Class D50-X drawbar eyes to the preceding series, and renumbering (paras. 13.5. to 13.7.)
New paragraphs 13.5. and 13.6. apply notwithstanding paragraph 13.3. to type approvals of Class D50-X drawbar eyes to the preceding series of amendments. Until 1 September 2023, Contracting Parties applying this Regulation must accept these type approvals if they were first issued before 1 September 2021 (paragraph 13.5.). As from 1 September 2023, they are not obliged to accept these type approvals (paragraph 13.6.). The former paragraph 13.5. is now paragraph 13.7.
Q2Why it changed

Reasons
High capacity vehicle combinations made possible in Finland need high D-value coupling devices. The dimensions of these coupling devices are often very near to the limits of the current regulations.

“High capacity vehicle combinations made possible in Finland require high D-value coupling devices. This means the dimensions of the coupling devices are often very near to the limits of the current regulations.”
In Finland, market surveillance found incompatible type-approved drawbar eyes and drawbar couplings. The main issue is the vertical thickness of the shank of the drawbar eye. A maximum dimensioned D50-X shank cannot fully articulate inside C50 drawbar couplings.

Proposer's reason (informal document GRSG-118-35)
The transitional provisions for the 02 series of amendments were adopted at the previous GRSG session. The proposed new paragraphs 13.5. and 13.6. would only be applied for Class D50-X drawbar eyes.
Submitted by Expert from Finland. Working party adoption: ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRSG/97, para. 29.

Q3Who is affected
Vehicle manufacturer
- Check whether the Class D50-X drawbar eyes on your vehicles have type approvals to the preceding series of amendments.
Component supplier
- Make sure that your Class D50-X drawbar eyes have a form of shank within the form drawn in Figure 11.
- List your type approvals of Class D50-X drawbar eyes to the preceding series, with the date each was first issued.
Technical service / Approval authority
- When you test Class D50-X drawbar eyes, check the form of shank against the form drawn in Figure 11.
