UN R75 Supplement 18 (00 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 75 (ECE R75) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of pneumatic tyres for L-category vehicles.

UN R75 — Supplement 18 to the 00 series of amendments

Supplement 17 → 18

Adopted at the WP.29 178th sessionEntry into force 2020-01-11
What changed
  • Letter code “V” now identifies tyres suitable for maximum speeds above 240 km/h but below 270 km/h, and “Z” those for 270 km/h or above.
  • Tyres with speed category symbol and letter code “V” operated above 240 km/h but below 270 km/h get a new maximum load rating table.
  • From 1 September 2020, Contracting Parties applying this Regulation must not grant approvals under the original version to tyres that do not meet Supplement 18.
Why
  • The aim is to clarify the identification, marking and test provisions applicable to tyres designed for speeds above 240 km/h.
  • The proposal clearly separates three cases: maximum design speed above 240 km/h and below 270 km/h, of 270 km/h, and above 270 km/h.
  • It aims to clarify better in Annex 7 which conditions are only applicable to the second load/speed test, to minimize the risk of misinterpretations.

Q1What changed43 changes

Letter codes “V” and “Z” and marking for tyres above 240 km/h (paras. 2.31.3., 3.1.14. to 3.1.16., 4.1.15. and 7.1.4.)

Under paragraph 2.31.3., tyres suitable for maximum speeds in excess of 240 km/h but below 270 km/h must be identified by letter code “V”. Tyres suitable for maximum speeds of 270 km/h or above must be identified by letter code “Z”. Under new paragraph 3.1.16., tyres suitable for speeds above 270 km/h must bear, within parenthesis, the load capacity index applicable at 240 km/h. They must also bear the reference speed category symbol “W”, in case of tyres identified with the letter code “Z” within the size designation. Paragraph 3.1.15. now covers tyres suitable for speeds above 240 km/h but below 270 km/h, with the load capacity index applicable at 210 km/h. Paragraphs 4.1.15. and 7.1.4. now say “over 240 km/h but below 270 km/h” for tyres identified by letter code “V”.

Tyres suitable for maximum speeds in excess of 240 km/h are but below 270 km/h shall be identified by means of letter codes "V" and tyres suitable for maximum speeds of 270 km/h or above shall be identified by means of letter code "Z" (see paragraph 2.36.3.) ". The letter code shall be placed within the tyre size designation in front of the indications of the structure (see paragraph 3.1.4.).
Tyres suitable for speeds above 240 km/h must shall be marked with the appropriate letter code "V" or "Z", '', as applicable (see defined in paragraph 2.36.3.) in front of the indication of the structure (see paragraph 3.1.4.) 2.31.3.

Maximum load rating at speeds above 210 km/h (paras. 2.36.3. to 2.36.6.)

Paragraph 2.36.3. now covers tyres classified with speed category symbol “V” operated at speeds above 210 km/h but not exceeding 240 km/h. New paragraph 2.36.4. has a table for tyres with speed category symbol “V” and letter code “V” operated above 240 km/h but below 270 km/h. The values for 250 to 270 km/h are applicable up to the maximum speed specified by the tyre manufacturer, which must be below 270 km/h. New paragraph 2.36.5. covers tyres with speed category symbol “W” and letter code “Z” designed for speeds up to 270 km/h and above. For “W” and “Z” tyres designed for speeds above 270 km/h and operated above 270 km/h, paragraph 2.36.6. limits maximum load rating by linear interpolation. The interpolation is between the load rating prescribed at 270 km/h and the maximum load at maximum speed, both as specified by the tyre manufacturer.

For tyres classified with speed category symbol "V" operated at speeds above 210 km/h but not exceeding 270 240 km/h, the maximum load rating must shall not exceed the percentage of the mass, associated with the load capacity index of the tyre, indicated in the table below with reference to the speed category symbol of the tyre and the maximum design speed capability of the vehicle to which the tyre is to be fitted:
Maximum operating speed (km/h)*** ) Maximum Load Rating (%) Speed Category Symbol V Speed Category Symbol W** load rating (per cent) 210 100 100 220 95 100 230 90 100 240 85 100 250 (80)* 95 260 (75)* 85 270 (70)* 75

Second load/speed test for tyres above 240 km/h (para. 6.2.1.1. and Annex 7)

Paragraph 6.2.1.1. adds a limit for tyres identified by letter code “V” and suitable for speeds over 240 km/h. Their maximum load specified by the manufacturer must not exceed the maximum load rating in paragraph 2.36.4. for the manufacturer's maximum speed. For the second test, new Annex 7 paragraph 2.6.1. applies 65 per cent of the maximum load at the tyre manufacturer's maximum speed. Paragraphs 2.2.4., 2.5.2.1. and 2.5.6.1. of Annex 7 are deleted. The initial and maximum test speeds of the second test are now given in paragraphs 2.6.2. and 2.6.4., in place of paragraphs 2.5.2.1. and 2.5.6.1. In Annex 7, paragraph 2.2.3. now refers to paragraph 2.36.5. in place of 2.36.3.

Where application is made for tyres identified by means of letter code "V" '' within the size designation and suitable for speeds over 240 km/h or for tyres identified by means of letter code "Z" within the size designation and suitable for speeds over 270 km/h (see paragraph 4.1.15.), the above load/speed test is carried out on one tyre at the load and speed conditions marked within parenthesis on the tyre (see paragraph 3.1.15.). Another load/speed test must be carried out on a second tyre of the same type at the load and speed conditions, if any, specified as maximum by the tyre manufacturer (see paragraph 4.1.15.). For tyres identified by means of letter code "V'' within the size designation and suitable for speeds over 240 km/h, the maximum load specified by the manufacturer shall not exceed the maximum load rating indicated in paragraph 2.36.4. with reference to the maximum speed specified by the manufacturer.
The maximum load rating associated with a maximum speed of 270 km/h for tyres with speed symbol "W" (see paragraph 2.36.3.); 2.36.5. of this Regulation),

Transitional provisions for Supplement 18 (para. 12.)

New paragraph 12. adds transitional provisions. Paragraph 12.1. applies from the official date of entry into force of Supplement 18. From then, no Contracting Party applying this Regulation may refuse to grant or refuse to accept type approvals according to Supplement 18. From 1 September 2020, Contracting Parties applying this Regulation must not grant approvals under the original version to tyres that do not meet Supplement 18. For tyres first type approved before 31 August 2020, Contracting Parties applying this Regulation can continue to grant extensions without taking into account Supplement 18.

Transitional provisions
As from the official date of entry into force of Supplement 18 to the original series of amendments to this Regulation, no Contracting Party applying this Regulation shall refuse to grant or refuse to accept type approvals according to Supplement 18 to the original version of this Regulation.
