UN R93 Supplement 1 (00 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 93 (ECE R93) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of: I. Front underrun protective devices (FUPDs) II. Vehicles with regard to the installation of an FUPD of an approved type III. Vehicles with regard to their front underrun protection (FUP).
UN R93 — Supplement 1 to the 00 series of amendments
Base text → Supplement 1
- What changed
- Paragraph 10.5. now gives the vertical plane in which the foremost part of the vehicle is measured for the 400 mm distance.
- New paragraph 2.2.6. of Annex 5 says that the FUP may be locally adapted to provide for an appropriately flat area for force application. Such a modification must not act as a reinforcement of the FUP structure itself.
- Why
- The amendment was proposed, in particular, to allow a more rounded shape of the cab in light of better aerodynamic performance.
- The proposal says that the previous version of the Regulation was only suitable for conventional flat fronted trucks.
- In the proposal, the forward reference point is to be taken in the same transverse location as where the force is applied.
Q1What changed2 changes
Vertical plane for the foremost part of the vehicle (para. 10.5.)
The FUP must have sufficient strength so that the horizontal distance measured in the rearward direction does not exceed 400 mm. This distance is between the foremost part of the vehicle and the test ram contact surface on the vehicle. The foremost part of the vehicle is now measured in the vertical plane which is parallel to the median longitudinal plane of the vehicle. This plane is corresponding with the geometric centre of the test ram contact surface in its initial position. Before, the paragraph gave no such plane. The text now refers to “the relevant test forces (as specified in Annex 5)”, not to “the test forces (specified in this annex)”.
Flat area for force application on the FUP (Annex 5, para. 2.2.6.)
New paragraph 2.2.6. of Annex 5 says that the FUP may be locally adapted to provide for an appropriately flat area for force application. The aim is to avoid lateral loading on the test ram during the test. Any such modification must not act as a reinforcement of the FUP structure itself. Before this supplement, Annex 5 had no paragraph 2.2.6.
Q2Why it changed
- Proposed by
- Expert from the European Commission
- Working party
- GRSG, 117th session (October 2019)
Reasons
The amendment was proposed, in particular, to allow a more rounded shape of the cab in light of better aerodynamic performance. It is expected that truck cabs will become more aerodynamic to improve fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions.

“The amendment is proposed, in particular, to allow more rounded shape of the cab in light of better aerodynamic performance.”
“It is expected that truck cabs will become more aerodynamic to improve fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions.”
The proposal says that the previous version of the Regulation was only suitable for conventional flat fronted trucks. The most forward point of the cab was taken as the reference point, regardless of the point of application of the FUP test force.
Source
“The current version of this Regulation is only suitable for conventional flat fronted trucks, as the most forward point of the cab is taken as the reference point, regardless of the point of application of the FUP test force.”
In the proposal, the forward reference point is to be taken in the same transverse location as where the force is applied. This means that the FUP can follow the contour of the cab. The distance is then measured along this contour, rather than at the foremost point of the overall cab.

Q3Who is affected
Vehicle manufacturer
- Check your FUP design against paragraph 10.5., with the foremost part of the vehicle in the new vertical plane.
- If you locally adapt the FUP for force application, make sure it does not reinforce the FUP structure itself.
Component supplier
- No direct action for this role.
Technical service / Approval authority
- Measure the foremost part of the vehicle in the vertical plane that paragraph 10.5. now gives.
- If the FUP is locally adapted for force application, check that it does not reinforce the FUP structure itself.
