Measurement of water (H2O) and dry-to-wet conversion (Annex 4, Appendix A.7; Annex 11, para. 8.2.)

New Appendix A.7 to Annex 4 gives the procedure for the measurement of water (H2O) with a QCL-IR or an FTIR analyser. It covers installation, cross interference, analyser drift, linearity, accuracy, response time and the H2O calibration gas. In Annex 11, paragraph 8.2., concentrations measured on a dry basis must now be converted to a wet basis by equation (A.11-1). Before, paragraph 8.2. said that Equation A.5-7 must not be used for engines operated solely on hydrogen. Under Annex 4, paragraph 9.3.2.3.1.1., sample dryers may not be used for a sample from which H2O or NH3 will be measured. A RegVault Note says that RegVault reads equation (A.12-1), printed without brackets, like equation (A.11-1); the Note is not part of the official text.

If the emissions are measured on a dry basis, Equation A.5-7 the measured concentration cd on dry basis shall not be used for engines operated solely converted to the concentration cw on hydrogen.a wet basis by means of equation (A.11-1):
Sample dryers may be used for removing moisture from the sample in order to decrease the effect of water on gaseous emissions measurement. Sample dryers may not be used to remove moisture from a sample from which H2O or NH3 will be measured. Sample dryers shall meet the requirements set out in paragraph 9.3.2.3.1.1. and in paragraph 9.3.2.3.1.2. of this Annex. The moisture content of 0.8 volume per cent H2O is used in equation (A.5-13).

FTIR and QCL-IR analysers (definitions and Annex 4)

New paragraphs 2.1.102. and 2.1.103. define “Instrument manufacturer” and “Type of analyser”, and paragraph 2.2.2. adds FTIR and QCL-IR. From raw exhaust, CO, CO2 or NOx may be measured with an FTIR or QCL-IR analyser that meets paragraph 9.4.13. or 9.4.14., respectively. New paragraphs 9.4.13. and 9.4.14. give requirements for these analysers, including an analyser compliance declaration by the instrument manufacturer. New paragraphs 8.1.13. and 8.1.14. are headed “FTIR interference check” and “QCL-IR interference check”. Under new paragraph 9.4.15., the analyser manufacturer must check interference effects of the analysers of paragraphs 9.4.6. to 9.4.8., 9.4.13. and 9.4.14. before market introduction. In paragraph 9.4.10., the sentence that the sensor must be calibrated as specified by the instrument manufacturer is removed.

Due to the physical properties of a FTIR analyser, interferences between some gases are possible. Compensation algorithms may be used to reduce interference effects. Compensation algorithms that are used during an emission test shall be active when performing interference checks.
Due to the physical properties of a QCL-IR analyser interferences between some gases are possible. The interference test shall be performed for the gas analysers upon initial installation.

Test procedure changes (Annex 4 and its Appendix A.1)

Equation (A.4-16) is amended, and equation (A.4-17) now adds TAUX to Tmap. One tolerance is now ±10 per cent of idle, instead of ≤ 10 per cent of idle. Paragraph references change, for example to paragraphs 8.1.8.5.7., 9.3.4.6., 8.2.3.8. and A.1.3.1.1. In Appendix A.1, the abbreviations PTT and POT are replaced by PTL and OT. Other wording corrections are in paragraphs 7.3.1.1., 7.7.2.2. and 9.2.2.

Emissions may be measured during preconditioning cycles, as long as a predefined number of preconditioning cycles are performed and the measurement system has been started prepared according to the requirements of paragraph 7.3.1.4. of this Annex. The amount of preconditioning shall be identified by the engine manufacturer before starting to precondition. Preconditioning shall be performed as follows, noting that the specific cycles for preconditioning are the same ones that apply for emission testing.
%speed is the the value of NRTC or LSI-NRTC normalised speed taken from Appendix A.6 to this Annex.

Equations (A.5-6A.5-84) to (A.5-23A.5-101) in sub-paragraph (d) of this paragraph have to be entered into a computer program to iteratively solve for xH2Oexh, xCcombdry and xdil/exh. Good engineering judgment shall be used to guess initial values for xH2Oexh, xCcombdry, and xdil/exh. Guessing an initial amount of water that is about twice the amount of water in the intake or dilution air is recommended. Guessing an initial value of xCcombdry as the sum of the measured CO2, CO, and THC values is recommended. Guessing an initial xdil between 0.75 and 0.95, such as 0.8 is also recommended. Values in the system of equations shall be iterated until the most recently updated guesses are all within ± 1 per cent of their respective most recently calculated values values;
