UN R137 Supplement 4 (02 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 137 (ECE R137) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of vehicles with regard to restraint systems, fuel system integrity and protection against electrical shock in the event of a frontal collision.
UN R137 — Supplement 4 to the 02 series of amendments
Supplement 3 → 4
- What changed
- New paragraph 7.1.2.2. says when a structure change and/or a mass increase requires a repetition of the Annex 3 test.
- New paragraph 7.1.2.3. covers modifications of the interior fittings only, with no mass increase above 8 per cent and the same number of front seats. For these modifications, a simplified test as provided for in Annex 7 and/or a partial test must be carried out.
- New paragraph 7.1.2.1. says that further simplified testing may be conducted using alternative test procedures such as those described in Annex 7.
- Why
- The 02 series of amendments deleted a text that allows tolerances on the vehicle mass and simplified testing.
- The proposal would allow GRSP to decide whether the deletion was intended.
Q1What changed5 changes
Further test and simplified testing (para. 7.1.2.1.)
New paragraph 7.1.2.1. says: “Require the Technical Service responsible for conducting the tests to carry out a further test, among those described below, according to the nature of the modifications”. It adds: “As this regulation primarily intends to assess the vehicle restraint system, further simplified testing may be conducted using alternative test procedures such as those described in Annex 7”. Before this supplement, the regulation had no paragraph 7.1.2.1.
Repetition of the Annex 3 test after a structure or mass change (para. 7.1.2.2.)
New paragraph 7.1.2.2. requires a repetition of the test as described in Annex 3 for “Any modification of the vehicle affecting the general form of the structure of the vehicle and/or any increase in mass greater than 8 per cent which in the judgement of the Type approval Authority would have a marked influence on the results of the tests”. Before this supplement, the regulation had no paragraph 7.1.2.2.
Simplified and/or partial test for interior fitting changes (paras. 7.1.2.3. to 7.1.2.3.2.)
New paragraph 7.1.2.3. applies when the modifications concern only the interior fittings. Two more conditions apply: the mass does not increase by more than 8 per cent, and “the number of front seats initially provided in the vehicle remains the same”. In that case, a simplified test as provided for in Annex 7 and/or a partial test must be carried out. The Technical Service defines the partial test in relation to the modifications made. Before this supplement, the regulation had no paragraphs 7.1.2.3. to 7.1.2.3.2.
