UN R159 — Supplement 1 to the 00 series of amendments

Base text → Supplement 1

Adopted at the WP.29 185th sessionEntry into force 2022-06-22
What changed
  • Under paragraph 5.2.2.3.3., the Technical Service may check the operation of the system according to the detection adjustment strategy for a turning maneuver. Before, the text said “shall” instead of “may”.
  • Under paragraph 5.5.1., the driver must be informed if the MOIS has not been initialized after 15 seconds of cumulative driving time above 0 km/h. Before, the text said “calibrated” and had the words “(including stationary phases)”.
  • The exception in paragraph 5.8.3. now covers failure warning signals shown in a common space. Before, it covered collision warning signals shown in a common space to the failure warning signal.
Why
  • MOIS focuses on straight driving situations, and the testing procedure is not defined.
  • The word “initialisation” is used instead of “calibration” to be in line with the wording used in the AEB regulation.
  • The Appendix 1 changes clarify the definitions listed for Table 1 and Figure 1.

Q1What changed12 changes

Technical Service verification for turning maneuvers (para. 5.2.2.3.3.)

When performing a turning maneuver, the MOIS detection strategy may be adjusted. The Technical Service may now check the operation of the system according to the strategy. Before, the text said “shall” instead of “may”. The word “manoeuvre” is now spelt “maneuver”.

When performing a turning manoeuvremaneuver, the MOIS detection strategy may be adjusted. It is not required to adjust the sensors to the steering angle. The detection adjustment strategy shall be explained in the information referred to in paragraph 6.1. The Technical Service shall may verify the operation of the system according to the strategy.

Information to the driver on MOIS initialization (paras 5.5. and 5.5.1.)

Paragraph 5.5.1. uses a cumulative driving time of 15 seconds above a speed of 0 km/h. If the MOIS has not been initialized after this time, information of this status must be indicated to the driver. This information must exist until the system has been successfully initialized. Before, both sentences said “calibrated” instead of “initialized”, and the first sentence had the words “(including stationary phases)”. The heading of paragraph 5.5. is now spelt “System initialization”.

System initialisationinitialization
If the MOIS has not been calibrated initialized after a cumulative driving time of 15 seconds above a speed of 0 km/h (including stationary phases), , information of this status shall be indicated to the driver. This information shall exist until the system has been successfully calibratedinitialized.

Exception to failure warning activation with the master control switch (para. 5.8.3.)

The MOIS failure warning signal must be activated with the activation of the vehicle master control switch. This requirement now does not apply to failure warning signals shown in a common space. Before, the exception was for collision warning signals shown in a common space to the failure warning signal.

The MOIS failure warning signal shall be activated with the activation of the vehicle master control switch. This requirement does not apply to collision failure warning signals shown in a common space to the failure warning signal.

Reference in the stationary check of the optical failure warning signals (para. 6.4.1.)

Paragraph 6.4.1. now requires a check, with the vehicle stationary, that the optical failure warning signals comply with the requirements of paragraph 5.8. Before, it referred to paragraph 5.6.

With the vehicle stationary check that the optical failure warning signals comply with the requirements of paragraph 5.6. 5.8 above.

Definitions listed for Figure 1 and Table 1 (Appendix 1)

In Appendix 1, the definition of d25%, a distance relating to 25% of the vehicle width, is deleted. A new list of definitions is added, with dNSP, dOSP, dTC and dFSP.

d25% a distance relating to 25% of the vehicle width.

Q2Why it changed

Proposed by
Experts from VRU-Proxi Informal Working Group (VRU-Proxi)
Working party
GRSG, 121st session (April 2021)

Reasons

  • MOIS focuses on straight driving situations. As the testing procedure is not defined, this part of the requirement in paragraph 5.2.2.3.3. may lead to too much testing.

    Source
“Justifications for paragraph 5.2.2.3.3.: MOIS focuses on straight driving situations. As the testing procedure is not defined, this part of the requirement may lead to too many testing.”
  • The word initialisation is used instead of calibration to be in line with the wording used in the AEB regulation. The MOIS, like the AEB, needs driving situations to initialise the system.

    Sources (2)
“we agreed to use the word initialisation instead of calibration to be in line with the wording used in the AEB regulation.”
“The MOIS (and the AEB) needs driving situations to initialise the system.”
  • The justification for paragraph 5.8.3. is that paragraph 5.8. deals with failure warning signals.

    Source
“Justifications for paragraph 5.8.3.: 5.8 deals with failure warning signals.”
  • The Appendix 1 changes clarify the definitions listed for Table 1 and Figure 1.

    Source
“Justifications for Appendix 1.: clarifications of the definitions listed for the table 1 and figure 1.”
  • Proposer's reason (informal document GRSG-121-10)

Paragraph 6.4.1. describes the test that checks the conformity of the optical failure warning signal. Paragraph 5.6. refers to the information signal requirements, and paragraph 5.8. refers to the failure warning signal requirements. So paragraph 6.4.1. should refer to paragraph 5.8.

Submitted by Informal Working Group on Awareness of Vulnerable Road Users Proximity. Working party adoption: ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRSG/100, para. 49.

    Sources (2)
“6.4.1 describes the test to be done to check the optical failure warning signal conformity”
“5.6 refers to the information signal requirements. 5.8 refers to the failure warning signal requirements. So, the correct paragraph number, 6.4.1 should refer to is 5.8”

Q3Who is affected

Vehicle manufacturer

  • Inform the driver if the MOIS is not initialized after 15 seconds of cumulative driving above 0 km/h (para. 5.5.1.).
  • Check your failure warning signals shown in a common space against the exception in paragraph 5.8.3.

Component supplier

  • No direct action for this role.

Technical service / Approval authority

  • For a turning maneuver, decide whether to check the operation of the system according to the detection strategy (para. 5.2.2.3.3.).
  • With the vehicle stationary, check the optical failure warning signals against the requirements of paragraph 5.8 (para. 6.4.1.).
