UN R29 Supplement 4 (03 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 29 (ECE R29) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of vehicles with regard to the protection of the occupants of the cab of a commercial vehicle.
UN R29 — Supplement 4 to the 03 series of amendments
Supplement 3 → 4
- What changed
- Tests A, B and C on a cab mounted on the vehicle now apply as described in the general instructions for securing (paragraph 1.).
- Rigid composite blocks and/or adjustable metal brackets are added to wooden blocks as supports for the longitudinal members of the chassis frame.
- For test C, the chains or ropes B are replaced by the chains or ropes E and F.
- Why
- The proposed amendments give the necessary securing specifications also for test B and test C, to improve the repeatability of the tests.
- Rigid composite blocks and/or (adjustable) metal brackets are allowed to make the fixation of the vehicle on the test rig more convenient.
Q1What changed41 changes
General instructions for securing for tests A, B and C (para. 1.)
Paragraph 1. of Annex 3, Appendix 1 has the new title “General instructions for securing”. Test A, test B and test C each apply to a cab mounted on the vehicle as described in paragraph 1. Before this supplement, test A applied to a cab mounted on the vehicle “in the following way (see figure 1 below)”. Paragraph 1.1. says that measures must be taken to make sure that the vehicle does not shift appreciably during the test. The requirement to eliminate deformation of the suspension components (springs, tyres, etc.) by means of rigid members is deleted. New paragraph 2.2. for a cab mounted on a frame requires measures so that the cab does not shift appreciably during the test.
Blocks and brackets that support the chassis frame (para. 1.3.)
The longitudinal members of the chassis frame must be supported on wooden blocks, rigid composite blocks and/or adjustable metal brackets. This support is across their full width and over a length of not less than 150 mm. Before this supplement, the text said “supported on wooden blocks across their full width”. The paragraph now also refers to Figure 1.
Lateral attachment with chains or ropes B for tests A and B (paras. 2.1.1. and 3.1.1.)
For test A (paragraph 2.1.1.) and test B (paragraph 3.1.1.), lateral movement must be limited by chains or ropes B. These chains or ropes are attached to the chassis frame symmetrically in relation to its longitudinal axis. Each point of attachment to the chassis must be not more than 5 m and not less than 3 m from the vehicle front. Paragraph 3.1.1. is new.
Roof strength test C: chains or ropes E and F and an additional support (paras. 1.5., 4.1.1. and 4.1.2.)
Paragraph 1.5. now says that for test C, the chains or ropes B are replaced by the chains or ropes E and F. For test C, notwithstanding paragraph 1.3., an additional support must go under both sides of the longitudinal members of the chassis frame’s front end. Chains or rope E must be attached to the chassis not more than 5 m and not less than 3 m from the vehicle front. Chains or rope F must be attached to the chassis between the centre of the front axle and the front of the vehicle. When tensioned, the chains or ropes must form a downward angle of not more than 20° with the horizontal. Their projection on a horizontal plane must form an angle 90°±5° with the longitudinal axis of the vehicle (see Figure 2 below).
New Figures 1 and 2
Figure 1 is deleted, and new Figures 1 and 2 are inserted. The title of Figure 1 changes from “Front impact test” to “Front impact test and front pillars impact test”. New Figure 2 has the title “Roof strength test” and the text “The cab is mounted on the vehicle”.
Conformity of production and Schedule 1 of the Agreement (para. 7.)
The conformity of production procedures must comply with those set out in the Agreement (Schedule 1, E/ECE/TRANS/505/Rev.3), with the requirements that follow. Before this supplement, paragraph 7. referred to the Agreement, Appendix 2 (E/ECE/324-E/ECE/TRANS/505/Rev.2).
Q2Why it changed
- Proposed by
- Expert from Germany

- GRSP, 63rd session (May 2018)
Reasons
Before this supplement, test A contained detailed specifications on how to secure a cab mounted on a vehicle on the test rig. The proposed amendments give the necessary specifications also for test B and test C, to improve the repeatability of the tests.
Sources (2)
“Currently test A of UN Regulation No. 29 contains detailed specifications on how to secure a cab mounted on a vehicle on the test rig.”
“provide the necessary specifications also for test B and test C to improve the repeatability of the tests.”
The proposal also allows rigid composite blocks and/or (adjustable) metal brackets instead of the wooden block shown in Figure 1. This makes the fixation of the vehicle on the test rig more convenient.

“The proposal also allows, instead of the wooden block shown in Figure 1, to use rigid composite blocks and/or (adjustable) metal brackets to make the fixation of the vehicle on the test rig more convenient.”
For Test C (Roof Strength), ropes/chains B are not required because ropes E and F are used instead for lateral attachment. The updates to paragraph 1.5. clarify this.
