Q1What changed6 changes

Test track surface to ISO 10844:2021 (Annex 3)

The surface of the test track must conform to ISO 10844:2021. Before this supplement, it had to conform to ISO 10844:2014.

The surface of the test track shall conform to ISO 10844:2014ISO10844:2021.

Transitional provision on ISO 10844:2021 and ISO 10844:2014 (para. 10.8.)

New paragraph 10.8. says that ISO 10844:2021 must be accepted for all approvals under this Regulation from the entry into force of Supplement 6. Until five years from that date, ISO 10844:2014 must also be accepted for all approvals under this Regulation.

From the entry into force of Supplement 6, ISO 10844:2021 shall be accepted for all approvals granted under this Regulation. Until five years from the entry into force of Supplement 6, ISO 10844:2014 shall be accepted for all approvals granted under this Regulation.

Sentence on ISO 10844:2014 removed (paras. 10.3. and 10.4.)

Supplement 6 removes the last sentence of paragraphs 10.3. and 10.4. This sentence said that the specification of the test track may conform to ISO 10844:2014. The rest of the two paragraphs does not change.

Notwithstanding the transitional provisions above, Contracting Parties applying this Regulation may grant type approvals according to any preceding series of amendments to this Regulation. However, the specification of the test track may conform to ISO 10844:2014.
Contracting Parties applying this Regulation shall continue to grant extensions of existing approvals to any preceding series of amendments to this Regulation. However, the specification of the test track may conform to ISO 10844:2014.

Wording of the test site text (Annex 3, para. 2.1.1.)

In the description of the test site, “substantially level test area” becomes “substantially level area”. In the sentence on large sound reflecting objects, the adopted text adds the word “test” after “buildings”.

The test site shall consist of a central acceleration track surrounded by a substantially level test area. The test track shall be level; the track surface shall be dry and so designed that rolling sound remains low.
On the test site, free sound field conditions shall be maintained to within ±1 dB between the sound source placed in the middle of the acceleration section and the microphone. This condition shall be deemed to be met if there are no large sound reflecting objects such as hedges, rocks, bridges or buildings test within 50 m of the centre of the acceleration section.

Q2Why it changed

Proposed by
Experts from France, IMMA and ISO
Working party
GRBP, 79th session (February 2024)

Reasons

  • The proposal is for the use of the test track of the latest standard, ISO 10844:2021.

    Source
“considered a revised proposal for the use of the latest standard ISO 10844:2021 test track”
  • ISO updated the ISO 10844 standard to reduce the variability from one test track to another. This variability comes from different interpretations and implementations of the technical requirements.

    Source
“ISO has updated the ISO 10844 standard to reduce track-to-track variability caused by different interpretations and implementations of the technical requirements.”
  • IMMA saw a possible risk that test tracks would need new certification if ISO 10844:2014 was no longer an option. IMMA said that this would be an administrative burden with no practical benefit.

    Source
“without maintaining the current ISO 10844:2014 as an option, IMMA sees a potential risk of tracks to need re-certification, thus creating an administrative burden with no practical benefit.”
  • Proposer's reason (informal document GRBP-79-17)

The proposal follows the same approach as document GRBP/2022/13. GRBP/2022/13 was adopted as Supplement 8 to UN Regulation No. 51 at the seventy-sixth session of GRBP.

Submitted by the experts from France, IMMA and ISO. Working party adoption: ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRBP/77, para. 10.
