UN R85 Supplement 11 (00 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 85 (ECE R85) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of internal combustion engines or electric drive trains intended for the propulsion of motor vehicles of categories M and N with regard to the measurement of the net power and the maximum 30 minutes power of electric drive trains.

UN R85 — Supplement 11 to the 00 series of amendments

Supplement 10 → 11

Adopted at the WP.29 187th sessionEntry into force 2023-01-04
What changed
  • Annex 6 now also applies to electric drive trains used as the sole mode of propulsion of HEVs, at least for part of the time.
  • Annex 5, paragraph 4.7., now says “Depression in intake duct” and refers to note 1a to table 1.
Why
  • There has been confusion whether Annex 6 applies only to pure electric vehicles.
  • Some regions require a statement of the maximum 30 minutes power of a traction electric motor for certain hybrid electric vehicles.
  • The proposal uses “depression” to align with ISO 1585:2020 and to clarify that the measurement point differs between naturally aspirated and pressure charged engines.

Q1What changed4 changes

Electric drive trains of hybrid electric vehicles (para. 1.3. and Annex 6, para. 1.)

Annex 6 gives the requirements for measuring the maximum net power and the maximum 30 minutes power of electric drive trains. These requirements now also apply to electric drive trains used as the sole mode of propulsion of HEVs, at least for part of the time. Before this supplement, paragraph 1. of Annex 6 named electric drive trains used for propelling pure electric road vehicles. In paragraph 1.3., the words “at least for part of the time” now follow “as the sole mode of propulsion”.

These requirements apply for measuring the maximum net power and the maximum 30 minutes power of electric drive trains used for propelling pure electric road vehicles or electric drive trains which are used as the sole mode of propulsion of hybrid electric vehicles, at least for part of the time.
The electric drive trains are composed of controllers and motors and which are used for propulsion of vehicles as the sole mode of propulsion, at least for part of the time.

Depression in intake duct (Annex 5, para. 4.7.)

Annex 5, paragraph 4.7., now says “Depression in intake duct” instead of “Pressure in intake-duct”. The paragraph now refers to note 1a to table 1. The value ± 50 Pa does not change.

Q2Why it changed

Proposed by
Expert from the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA)
Working party
GRPE, 85th session (January 2022)

Reasons

  • There has been confusion whether Annex 6 applies only to pure electric vehicles, as paragraph 1 of that annex states. One interpretation is that paragraph 1.3. also applies Annex 6 to traction electric motors of hybrid electric vehicles capable of pure electric driving.

“There has been confusion whether Annex 6 of this Regulation applies only to pure electric vehicles as stated in paragraph 1 of that annex.”
“There is an interpretation that paragraph 1.3. also applies Annex 6 to the traction electric motors of hybrid electric vehicles providing they are capable of pure electric driving.”
  • Some regions require a statement of the maximum 30 minutes power of a traction electric motor for certain hybrid electric vehicles.

“A statement of the maximum 30 minutes power of a traction electric motor is required by some regions for certain hybrid electric vehicles.”
  • At the GRPE session, the representative from the UK proposed alternative wording to clarify the proposed provisions.

“The representative from the UK proposed alternative wording to clarify the proposed provisions, as amended during the session and reflected in Annex V.”
  • The proposal uses the word “depression” for alignment with ISO 1585:2020. This is to clarify that the measurement point is different between naturally aspirated and pressure charged engines.
