UN R98 Supplement 2 (02 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 98 (ECE R98) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of motor vehicle headlamps equipped with gas-discharge light sources.
UN R98 — Supplement 2 to the 02 series of amendments
Supplement 1 → 2
- What changed
- In the table of paragraph 6.2.5., the symbols “E max R” and “E max L” change to “I max R” and “I max L”.
- The table also has a new row 1 for point HV, with a luminous intensity limit of 625 cd.
- Why
- The new symbols correct a mistake made by the 01 series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 98.
- That series replaced illuminance measurements with luminous intensity measurements but kept the symbols “E max R” and “E max L”.
Q1What changed1 change
Table of test points (para. 6.2.5.): new symbols and new row 1
In the table of test points of paragraph 6.2.5., two rows now use the symbols “I max R” and “I max L”. Before this supplement, these rows used “E max R” and “E max L”. The table also has a new row 1 for point HV, with a luminous intensity limit of 625 cd.
Q2Why it changed
- Proposed by
- Informal Working Group on Simplification of Lighting and Light-Signalling Regulations
- Working party
- GRE, 83rd session (October 2020)
Reasons
The new symbols correct a mistake made by the 01 series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 98. When that series introduced luminous intensity measurements instead of illuminance measurements, it did not change the symbols “E max R” and “E max L” to “I max R” and “I max L”.

“when luminous intensity measurements were introduced instead of illuminance measurements: change of the symbols “E max R” and “E max L” to “I max R” and “I max L” was not done.”
IWG SLR prepared the corrections after it found errors in UN Regulation No. 149. These errors come from existing mistakes in the frozen UN Regulations Nos. 98 and 123.

Q3Who is affected
Vehicle manufacturer
- Ask your headlamp suppliers if their headlamps meet the new row 1 for point HV (625 cd).
Component supplier
- Check the luminous intensity of your headlamp at point HV against the new row 1 (625 cd).
- Use “I max R” and “I max L” instead of “E max R” and “E max L” in your photometric documents.
Technical service / Approval authority
- Add point HV (new row 1, 625 cd) to the test points that you measure for this table.
- Use the symbols “I max R” and “I max L” in your test reports.
