UN R100 Supplement 5 (02 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 100 (ECE R100) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of vehicles with regard to specific requirements for the electric power train.

UN R100 — Supplement 5 to the 02 series of amendments

Supplement 4 → 5

Adopted at the WP.29 191st sessionEntry into force 2024-06-15
What changed
  • Annex 8D, paragraph 3.2.1., now names two force directions: horizontally in the direction of travel of the REESS, and horizontally perpendicular to it.
  • A separate test-device may be used for each of the test directions.
  • The figure of the crush plate in paragraph 3.2.1. is replaced.
Why
  • A REESS tested with a generic component-based integrity test should be loaded in two different directions.
  • In vehicle-based tests, the REESS is loaded in two directions: frontal and lateral.

Q1What changed5 changes

Two directions for the application force (Annex 8D, para. 3.2.1.)

In paragraph 3.2.1. of Annex 8D, the text now names two directions for the application force. These are (a) horizontally and in the direction of travel of the REESS, and (b) horizontally and perpendicular to that direction. Before this supplement, the text named one direction: horizontally and perpendicular to the direction of travel of the REESS. A separate test-device may be used for each of the test directions.

The application of the force shall be decided by the manufacturer together with the Technical Service technical service having consideration to the direction of travel of the REESS relative to its installation in the vehicle. The application force being applied ; (a) horizontally and in the direction of travel of the REESS, and (b) horizontally and perpendicular to the direction of travel of the REESS. For each of the test directions specified, a separate test-device may be used.

Crush force sentence and crush plate figure (Annex 8D, para. 3.2.1.)

The crush force sentence changes only in capital letters, spacing and punctuation, for example “tested-Device”, “figure 1” and “Paragraph 6.4.2”. The force of at least 100 kN, but not exceeding 105 kN, the onset time and the hold time do not change. The figure of the crush plate is replaced. The separate line “Figure 1” is deleted.

The tested-device tested-Device shall be crushed between a resistance and a crush plate as described in Figure figure 1 with a force of at least 100 kN, but not exceeding 105 kN, unless otherwise specified in accordance with paragraph Paragraph 6.4.2. of this Regulation, with an onset time less than 3 minutes and a hold time of at least 100 ms but not exceeding 10 s10s.

Q2Why it changed

Proposed by
Expert from France

GRSP, 73rd session (May 2023)

Reasons

  • A REESS tested with a generic component-based integrity test should be loaded in two different directions. One test is in the direction of travel of the vehicle, and one test is perpendicular to it. The text was changed to clarify this point.

    Sources (2)
“REESS tested with a generic component-based integrity test should be loaded in two different directions: one test in the direction of travel of the vehicle and one test perpendicular to the direction of travel of the vehicle”
“and the text was modified to clarify this point.”
  • In vehicle-based tests, the REESS is subjected to vehicle crash tests for frontal impact and for side impact. The REESS is therefore loaded in two directions: frontal and lateral.

    Sources (2)
“UN Regulation No. 12, Annex 3 or UN Regulation No. 94, Annex 3 for frontal impact, and Regulation No. 95, Annex 4 for side impact”
“The REESS(s) will therefore be loaded in two directions: frontal and lateral.”
  • In the vehicle specific component test, the vehicle manufacturer must determine the crush force with data from actual crash tests or their simulation. This is done in the direction of travel and in the direction horizontally perpendicular to it. Therefore, forces must be applied in both directions.

    Sources (3)
“the crush force replacing the prescribed force specified in paragraph 3.2.1. of Annex 8D shall be determined by the vehicle manufacturer using the data obtained from either actual crash tests or its simulation”
“in the direction of travel and according to Annex 4 to UN Regulation No. 95 in the direction horizontally perpendicular to the direction of travel”
“Therefore, forces must be applied in both directions: frontal (in the direction of travel) and lateral (perpendicular to the direction of travel).”
  • The working document ECE/TRANS/WP29/GRSP/2012/10 explains that the component test loads were derived from REESS contact loads observed in vehicle crash tests. Paragraph 38 of part II of that document explicitly prescribes two directions.

    Sources (2)
“the loads used in the integrity tests for component tests were derived from REESS contact loads which have been observed on vehicle crash tests according to UN Regulations Nos. 12, 94 and 95”
“As consequence paragraph 38 of part II prescribes explicitly two directions.”

Q3Who is affected

Vehicle manufacturer

  • Plan crush tests in two directions: horizontally in the direction of travel of the REESS, and horizontally perpendicular to it.
  • Plan the number of test-devices, because a separate test-device may be used for each test direction.

Component supplier

  • Prepare REESS test-devices for crush tests in both specified directions; a separate test-device may be used for each direction.

Technical service / Approval authority

  • Be ready for crush tests horizontally in the direction of travel of the REESS and horizontally perpendicular to it.
