UN R100 Supplement 3 (03 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 100 (ECE R100) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of vehicles with regard to specific requirements for the electric power train.

UN R100 — Supplement 3 to the 03 series of amendments

Supplement 2 → 3

Adopted at the WP.29 191st sessionEntry into force 2024-06-15
What changed
  • The crush force is applied horizontally and in the direction of travel of the REESS, and horizontally and perpendicular to it.
  • The text adds “together with the technical service” to the manufacturer's decision on the application of the force.
  • A separate test-device may be used for each of the test directions specified.
Why
  • In vehicle-based tests, the REESS is loaded in two directions: frontal and lateral.
  • A REESS tested with a generic component-based integrity test should be loaded in two different directions.

Q1What changed4 changes

Crush force directions (Annex 9D, para. 3.2.1.)

The manufacturer together with the technical service must decide the application of the force. As before, the decision has consideration to the direction of travel of the REESS relative to its installation in the vehicle. The force is applied horizontally and in the direction of travel of the REESS, and horizontally and perpendicular to it. A separate test-device may be used for each of the test directions specified. Before this supplement, the manufacturer decided the application of the force. The force was applied horizontally and perpendicular to the direction of travel of the REESS.

The application of the force shall be decided by the manufacturer together with the technical service having consideration to the direction of travel of the REESS relative to its installation in the vehicle. The application force being applied ; (a) horizontally and in the direction of travel of the REESS, and (b) horizontally and perpendicular to the direction of travel of the REESS. For each of the test directions specified, a separate test-device may be used.

Crush plate figure (Annex 9D, para. 3.2.1.)

The crush plate figure has a new drawing. The separate text line “Figure 1” is deleted. The crush force paragraph still refers to “figure 1”.

Crush force wording (Annex 9D, para. 3.2.1.)

The crush force paragraph has small changes in capital letters, punctuation and spacing: “tested-Device”, “figure 1”, “Paragraph 6.4.2” and “10s”. The force limits, the onset time and the hold time do not change.

The Tested-Device tested-Device shall be crushed between a resistance and a crush plate as described in Figure figure 1 with a force of at least 100 kN, but not exceeding 105 kN, unless otherwise specified in accordance with paragraph Paragraph 6.4.2. of this Regulation, with an onset time less than 3 minutes and a hold time of at least 100 ms but not exceeding 10 s10s.

Q2Why it changed

Proposed by
Expert from France
Working party
GRSP, 73rd session (May 2023)

Reasons

  • In vehicle-based tests, the REESS installed in the vehicle is subjected to vehicle crash tests. It is therefore loaded in two directions: frontal and lateral.

    Sources (2)
“In case of vehicle-based tests, Rechargeable Electric Energy Storage System(s) (REESS(s)) installed in vehicles are subjected to vehicle crash tests”
“The REESS(s) will therefore be loaded in two directions: frontal and lateral.”
  • In a vehicle specific component test, the vehicle manufacturer determines the crush force for the direction of travel and the horizontally perpendicular direction. Therefore, forces must be applied in both directions: frontal and lateral.

    Sources (2)
“in the direction of travel and according to Annex 4 to UN Regulation No. 95 in the direction horizontally perpendicular to the direction of travel”
“Therefore, forces must be applied in both directions: frontal (in the direction of travel) and lateral (perpendicular to the direction of travel).”
  • Component test loads were derived from REESS contact loads observed in vehicle crash tests under UN Regulations Nos. 12, 94 and 95. REESS charged with the maximum observed contact load in the direction of travel and horizontal perpendicular to it can be assumed safe in a crash.

    Sources (2)
“the loads used in the integrity tests for component tests were derived from REESS contact loads which have been observed on vehicle crash tests according to UN Regulations Nos. 12, 94 and 95”
“a REESS charged with the maximum observed contact load in the direction of travel and horizontal perpendicular to this direction can be assumed as save in the event of a vehicle crash”
  • A REESS tested with a generic component-based integrity test should be loaded in two different directions. One test is in the direction of travel of the vehicle and one test is perpendicular to it. The text was changed to make this point clear.

    Sources (2)
“REESS tested with a generic component-based integrity test should be loaded in two different directions: one test in the direction of travel of the vehicle and one test perpendicular to the direction of travel of the vehicle”
“the text was modified to clarify this point”

Q3Who is affected

Vehicle manufacturer

  • Decide the force application with the technical service, considering the REESS travel direction relative to its installation in the vehicle.
  • Plan the number of test-devices: a separate test-device may be used for each of the test directions specified.

Component supplier

  • Be ready for REESS crush tests in both directions: horizontally in, and horizontally perpendicular to, its direction of travel.

Technical service / Approval authority

  • Decide the force application with the manufacturer, considering the REESS travel direction relative to its installation in the vehicle.
  • Check that the crush test covers both directions: horizontally in, and horizontally perpendicular to, the REESS direction of travel.
