UN R100 Supplement 1 (03 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 100 (ECE R100) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of vehicles with regard to specific requirements for the electric power train.
UN R100 — Supplement 1 to the 03 series of amendments
Base text → Supplement 1
- What changed
- The “Specific voltage condition” definition in paragraph 2.42. has a new Note 2. For pulsating DC voltages (alternating voltages without change of polarity), the DC threshold must be applied.
- The existing note of paragraph 2.42. is renumbered as Note 1.
- Why
- The expert from CLEPA introduced the proposal to clarify specific conditions concerning a clear interpretation of an AC voltage (rms).
- Pulsating or switched DC voltages between a DC live part and an AC live part can be misinterpreted as an AC voltage.
Q1What changed2 changes
DC threshold for pulsating DC voltages in the “Specific voltage condition” (para. 2.42.)
Paragraph 2.42. defines the “Specific voltage condition”. New Note 2 says that for pulsating DC voltages (alternating voltages without change of polarity), the DC threshold must be applied. The existing note of paragraph 2.42. is renumbered as Note 1. The text of that note does not change.
Q2Why it changed
- Proposed by
- Expert from CLEPA the European Association of Automotive Suppliers
- Working party
- GRSP, 69th session (May 2021)
Reasons
The expert from CLEPA introduced the proposal to clarify specific conditions concerning a clear interpretation of an AC voltage (rms).

“The expert from CLEPA introduced a proposal GRSP-69-04, through a presentation (GRSP-69-03) to clarify specific conditions concerning a clear interpretation of an AC voltage (rms).”
Proposer's reason (informal document GRSP-69-04)
The voltages between a DC live part and an AC live part can be composite voltages: a ‘pure’ AC voltage with a DC offset. These voltages alternate, but without a change of polarity. These pulsating or switched DC voltages can be misinterpreted as an AC voltage.

“The voltages between “a DC life part and an AC life part” can be composite voltages means a ‘pure’ AC including a DC offset voltage.”
“These voltages are alternating, but without a change of polarity. These pulsating/switched DC voltages can be miss-interpreted as an AC voltage.”
Proposer's reason (informal document GRSP-69-04)
The AC (rms) threshold has to be applied to the ‘pure’ AC voltage, and the DC threshold to the DC voltages. To apply the AC (rms) threshold to a pulsating/switched DC voltage is inappropriate. Pulsating DC voltages are a special case of alternating voltages without change of polarity, and the DC threshold has to be applied to them.

“Pulsating DC voltages (sometimes also called ‘switched’ DC) are a special case of alternating voltages without change of polarity. For these voltages the DC threshold has to be applied”
Proposer's reason (informal document GRSP-69-04)
The 03 series of amendments added the isolation resistance test after exposure to water. In case of misinterpretation, the “special voltage condition” would not be fulfilled, and this test has to be passed. Air cooled 48V motor generators with an integrated AD/DC voltage circuit are expected not to fulfil this test.

“The 03 series of amendments to Regulation 100 slightly changed the definition 2.42, added a new definition for “special voltage condition” and a the isolation resistance test after exposure to water.”
“In case of misinterpretation the new “special voltage condition” would not be fulfilled and the new isolation resistance test after exposure to water has to be passed successfully.”
“48V air cooled motor generators having and integrated AD/DC voltage circuit are expected not to fulfill this test and cannot be used any more.”
