UN R106 — Supplement 19 to the 00 series of amendments

Supplement 18 → 19

Adopted at the WP.29 183rd sessionEntry into force 2021-09-30
What changed
  • Tyre markings no longer have to be moulded during manufacture. The markings of paragraph 3.1. and the approval mark must be clearly legible, indelible and raised above or sunk below the tyre surface.
  • A date of manufacture that is not moulded must be applied not later than 24 hours after the tyre is removed from the mould.
  • The “LS” marking of paragraph 2.18.13. now refers to log-skidder tyres for forestry machines.
Why
  • The word “moulded” is a technical limitation linked to the technology available at the time of the first issue of the Regulations.
  • The removal of this technical limitation would be advisable following the principle of not stopping the technical innovations.
  • ETRTO proposes to allow tyre marking methods other than moulding, while keeping criteria on legible and indelible markings and the manufacturing date.

Q1What changed3 changes

Tyre markings: clearly legible, indelible, raised or sunk (para. 3.3.)

Paragraph 3.3. now covers the markings referred to in paragraph 3.1. and the approval mark prescribed in paragraph 5.4. These must be clearly legible, indelible and raised above or sunk below the tyre surface. Before, all markings had to be clearly and legibly moulded and produced as part of the process during manufacture. Branding or other methods of marking after completion of the original manufacturing process were not permitted. Paragraph 3.3. no longer contains these two sentences.

All markings shall be clearly and legibly moulded and produced as part of the process during manufacture. The use of branding or other methods of marking after completion of the original manufacturing process is not permitted. The markings referred to in paragraph 3.1. and the approval mark prescribed in paragraph 5.4. of this Regulation shall be clearly legible, indelible and raised above or sunk below the tyre surface.

Date of manufacture that is not moulded (new para. 3.4.1.)

If the date of manufacture is not moulded, it must be applied not later than 24 hours after the tyre is removed from the mould.

In the case that the date of manufacture is not moulded, it shall be applied not later than 24 hours after the tyre is removed from the mould.

“LS” marking for log-skidder tyres (para. 2.18.13.)

Paragraph 2.18.13. now gives the letters “LS” after the nominal rim diameter marking in case of log-skidder tyres for forestry machines. Before, it said “tyres for forestry machines”.

Q2Why it changed

Proposed by

GRBP, 72nd session (September 2020)

Reasons

  • As presented in informal document GRBP-71-08, the word “moulded” is a technical limitation. It is linked to the technology available at the time of the first issue of the Regulations. Now it is only one of the various technical solutions.

  • ETRTO proposes to amend the UN Regulations on tyres to allow tyre marking methods other than moulding, by keeping two criteria. Any technical solution alternative to moulding must guarantee that the markings on the tyre sidewall are clearly legible and indelible. The manufacturing date must be marked within 24 hours after de-moulding of the tyre. This is like in the United States Code of Federal Regulations 49 CFR 574.5.

“It shall be made sure that the marking of the manufacturing date will be done within 24 hours after de-moulding of the tyre (like in the United States of America Code of Federal Regulations 49 CFR 574.5).”
  • Proposer's reason (informal document GRBP-72-08)

The word “log-skidder” is added in paragraph 2.18.13. so that it does not conflict with paragraph 3.1.15. Paragraph 3.1.15. requires the inscriptions “HF - 1”, “HF - 2”, “HF - 3” or “HF - 4” for high-flotation tyres for forestry machines listed in Annex 5 Table 7.

Submitted by Experts from the European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation (ETRTO). Working party adoption: ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRBP/70, para. 15.
