UN R115 — Supplement 9 to the 00 series of amendments

Supplement 8 → 9

Adopted at the WP.29 179th sessionEntry into force 2020-05-29
What changed
  • New paragraph 2.5.1.4. makes the retrofit vehicle family relation valid for both indirect and direct injection petrol vehicles, if all its conditions are satisfied.
  • The conditions are a “master-slave” retrofit system, indirect (port fuel) gas injection mode, and at least one tested petrol direct injection parent vehicle.
  • Paragraph 2.5.1.5. for “master-slave” systems now refers to the definition in paragraph 2.1.5.
Why
  • The amendment lists the conditions for indirect and direct injection vehicles to belong to the same vehicle family.
  • Direct injection vehicles that operate with indirect gas injection apply the same gas injection technology as indirect injection vehicles.
  • The emission limits remain those of the parent vehicle.

Q1What changed5 changes

Direct and indirect injection petrol vehicles in one family (para. 2.5.1.4.)

The retrofit vehicle family relation can be valid for both indirect and direct injection petrol vehicles. All the following conditions must be satisfied. The retrofit system is “master-slave” according to paragraph 2.1.5. It operates in indirect (port fuel) gas injection mode on direct petrol injection vehicles. At least one petrol direct injection vehicle has been tested as parent vehicle.

With regard to the requirement of paragraph. 2.5.1.1. (e), the retrofit vehicle family relation applicable for the purpose of this Regulation only, will be considered valid for both indirect and direct injection petrol vehicles if all the following conditions are satisfied:
The retrofit system is “master-slave” according to the definition of paragraph. 2.1.5.

Master-slave systems with air injection or EGR (para. 2.5.1.5.)

The former paragraph 2.5.1.4. is now paragraph 2.5.1.5. It now refers to the “master-slave” definition in paragraph 2.1.5., not 2.1.6. It also uses the words “retrofit vehicle family relation applicable for the purpose of this Regulation only”. The family relation is still valid regardless of the presence of the air injection or the EGR.

With regard to the requirement of paragraph 2.5.1.1.(f) in case of a "master-slave" system, as defined in paragraph 2.1.62.1.5., the retrofit vehicle family relation applicable for the purpose of this Regulation only will be considered valid regardless of the presence of the air injection or the EGR.

Q2Why it changed

Proposed by
Expert from Italy
Working party
GRPE, 79th session (May 2019)

Reasons

  • The amendment lists the conditions for indirect and direct injection vehicles to belong to the same vehicle family.

    Source
“This proposal amends UN Regulation No. 115 to list the conditions to be met by indirect and direct injection vehicles to be considered as belonging to the same vehicle family.”
  • Direct injection petrol vehicles that operate with indirect gas injection apply the same gas injection technology as indirect injection vehicles. So they should be in the same family, if at least one such vehicle is tested as parent vehicle.

    Sources (2)
“Gasoline direct injection vehicles which operates in indirect gas injection should be listed in the same family as indirect gasoline injection vehicles, as the applied gas injection technology is the same”
“provided that at least one such vehicle is tested as parent vehicle according to the requirements of this Regulation”
  • The Netherlands asked for clearer text to make sure the Particulate Number (PN) limit is valid. Italy proposed a slight amendment to the text at the session.

    Sources (2)
“The representative from Netherlands requested some clarifications to the text to make sure the Particulate Number (PN) limit was valid.”
“a proposed slight amendment to the text, as reproduced in Annex IV.”
  • The amendment does not change the emission limits. They remain those of the parent vehicle.

    Source
“This proposal has no implications on the emissions limits that remain those of the parent vehicle.”
