UN R125 Supplement 2 (01 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 125 (ECE R125) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of motor vehicles with regard to the forward field of vision of the motor vehicle driver.
UN R125 — Supplement 2 to the 01 series of amendments
Supplement 1 → 2
- What changed
- Item (b) of paragraph 5.1.3. now covers any “defrosting/demisting” normally in “zigzag” or sinusoidal form with the listed dimensions. Before, item (b) covered “defrosting/demisting” located within zone A.
- A footnote now names “UN Regulation No. 43” instead of “Regulation No. 43”.
- Why
- Initially, exemptions for defrosting/defogging conductors were given only in zone A, as no other cases of application were identified when the requirement was drafted.
- In the case of application outside zone A, it seems appropriate to apply the same criteria for exemption limits, to align visibility performance levels.
Q1What changed4 changes
Defrosting/demisting in item (b) not limited to zone A (para. 5.1.3.)
Paragraph 5.1.3. lists items that are not considered to be obstructions to the field of vision. Item (b) now covers any “defrosting/demisting” normally in “zigzag” or sinusoidal form that has the listed dimensions. Before this supplement, item (b) covered “defrosting/demisting” located within zone A. The listed dimensions are a maximum visible width of 0.030 mm and a maximum conductor density. The maximum conductor density is 8/cm if the conductors are vertical and 5/cm if they are horizontal.
Wording updates in paragraph 5.1.3. and a footnote
Paragraph 5.1.3. now refers to “Annex 4, appendix, Figure 4”, with a lower-case “appendix”. A footnote now names “UN Regulation No. 43” instead of “Regulation No. 43”. The footnote still refers to Annex 18, paragraph 2.2. of that Regulation.

“Initially, exemptions for defrosting/defogging conductors have been provided only in Zone A, as no other cases of application were identified when the requirement was drafted.”
In the case of application outside zone A, it seems appropriate to apply the same criteria for exemption limits, to align visibility performance levels.
Source
“In the case of application outside zone A, it seems appropriate to apply the same criteria for exemption limits in order to align visibility performance levels.”
The exemption in paragraph 5.1.3. b) is then applicable both inside and outside zone A, depending on the case of application.
Source
“In this way, depending on the case of application, the exemption of the 180° field of vision in paragraph 5.1.3. b) is applicable both inside and outside Zone A as it is considered for radio conductors.”

Q3Who is affected
Vehicle manufacturer
- Check whether “defrosting/demisting” outside zone A meets item (b) of paragraph 5.1.3., to treat it as not an obstruction.
Component supplier
- No direct action for this role.
Technical service / Approval authority
- Be ready to assess “defrosting/demisting” normally in “zigzag” or sinusoidal form outside zone A against item (b) of paragraph 5.1.3.
