UN R135 — Supplement 3 to the 01 series of amendments

Supplement 2 → 3

Adopted at the WP.29 185th sessionEntry into force 2022-06-22
What changed
  • Item (b) of paragraph 1.1. now gives conditions for the acute angle alpha (α) of category N1 vehicles. For the angle, the vehicle is on a level surface, all tyres inflated as the vehicle manufacturer recommends, in unladen condition (paragraph 2.24.).
  • Two footnotes now refer to documents ECE/TRANS/WP.29/1044/Rev.3 and ECE/TRANS/WP.29/78/Rev.6.
Why
  • The angle alpha (α) measurement may vary with the surface on which the vehicle is placed, the tyre pressure and the vehicle loading status.
  • The proposal defines these parameters for a reproducible angle measurement, to establish whether a vehicle is in the scope of UN Regulation No. 135.

Q1What changed5 changes

Conditions for measuring the acute angle alpha (α) of category N1 vehicles (paragraph 1.1., item (b))

Item (b) of paragraph 1.1. now says how a category N1 vehicle is positioned for the acute angle alpha (α). For this angle, the vehicle is positioned on a level surface with all tyres inflated as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. For this angle, the vehicle is also in unladen condition as defined in paragraph 2.24. Before, item (b) gave the angle without these conditions. The angle limit of less than 22.0 degrees and the ratio limit of less than 1.30 do not change.

Category N1 vehicles where , when positioned on a level surface with all tyres inflated as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer and the vehicle in unladen condition as defined in paragraph 2.24., the acute angle alpha (α), measured , between a horizontal plane passing through the centre of the front axle and an angular transverse plane passing through the centre of the front axle and the R-point of the driver's seat, as illustrated below, is less than 22.0 degrees; or the ratio between the distance from the driver's R‑point to the centre of the rear axle (L101-L114) and the centre of the front axle and the driver's R-point (L114) is less than 1.30.

Mass format for category M1 vehicles and two footnote references

Item (a) now writes the gross vehicle mass of category M1 vehicles as “3,500 kg” instead of “3500 kg”. A footnote on the general guidelines on the scope of UN Regulations now refers to document ECE/TRANS/WP.29/1044/Rev.3 instead of Rev.1. A footnote on the Consolidated Resolution on the Construction of Vehicles (R.E.3.) now cites document ECE/TRANS/WP.29/78/Rev.6 instead of Rev.4, with a new web address.

Category M1 vehicles with a gross vehicle mass of up to 3500 3,500 kg; and
In accordance with the general guidelines on the scope of UN Regulations (see document ECE/TRANS/WP.29/1044/Rev.1ECE/TRANS/WP.29/1044/Rev.3), Regulation No. 135 type approvals may only be granted for vehicles within the scope of this Regulation and shall be accepted by all the Contracting Parties applying this Regulation. However, decisions regarding the vehicle categories required on a regional/national basis to meet the requirements of this Regulation shall be dealt with at the regional/national level. A Contracting Party may therefore restrict application of the requirements in its national legislation if it decides that such restriction is appropriate.

GRSP, 69th session (May 2021)

Reasons

  • The acute angle alpha (α) in paragraph 1.1. establishes whether a vehicle of category N1 is in the scope of UN Regulation No. 135.

    Source
“The acute angle alpha (α) in paragraph 1.1. of UN Regulation No. 135, 01 series of amendments, establishes whether a vehicle of category N1 is in the scope of UN Regulation No. 135.”
  • The measurement of this angle may vary with the surface on which the vehicle is placed, the tyre pressure and the vehicle loading status.

    Source
“may vary depending on the surface on which the vehicle is placed, the tire pressure and the loading status of the vehicle.”
  • The proposal defines these parameters to enable a reproducible measurement of the acute angle alpha (α). The aim is to establish whether a vehicle is in the scope of UN Regulation No. 135.

    Sources (2)
“The proposed amendment defines these parameters to enable a reproducible measurement of the acute angle alpha (α) to establish whether a vehicle is into the scope of UN Regulation No. 135.”
“aiming at defining parameters to enable a reproducible measurement of the acute angle alpha (α) to decide whether or not the vehicle is in the scope of the UN Regulation”
