UN R157 Supplement 3 (00 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 157 (ECE R157) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of vehicles with regard to Automated Lane Keeping Systems.
UN R157 — Supplement 3 to the 00 series of amendments
Supplement 2 → 3
- What changed
- The Regulation now applies to vehicles of Categories M and N, instead of vehicles of Category M1 (para. 1.1.).
- The table in paragraph 5.2.3.3. now has minimum time gap and minimum following distance columns for M2/M3 // N2/N3.
- The activated system must comply with traffic rules relating to the DDT in the country of operation, now “including responding to emergency/enforcement vehicles” (para. 5.1.2.).
- Why
- The limitation to passenger cars (M1 category vehicles) was agreed to deliver within the given timeline. The automotive industry has now reviewed the existing requirements under the premise of including all vehicle categories M and N.
- GRVA reviewed amendment proposals extending the scope of the Regulation to heavy vehicles.
- GRVA also reviewed a proposal for clarifications to the Regulation.
Q1What changed22 changes
Vehicle categories in paragraph 1.1. and the Introduction
The Regulation now applies to the type approval of vehicles of Categories M and N with regards to their ALKS (para. 1.1.). Before this supplement, it applied to vehicles of Category M1. In the Introduction, the words “and passenger cars (M1 vehicles)” are deleted after “limits the operational speed to 60 km/h maximum”.
Minimum following distance for M2/M3 // N2/N3 (para. 5.2.3.3.)
The table in paragraph 5.2.3.3. now has minimum time gap and minimum following distance columns for M2/M3 // N2/N3. Notwithstanding the formula result, at present speeds below 2 m/s the minimum following distance must never be less than 2 m for M1, N1. In the same case, it must never be less than 2.4 m for M2, M3, N2, N3. Before this supplement, this sentence gave 2 m and named no vehicle categories.
Text of the cutting-in vehicle requirement (para. 5.2.5.2.)
Paragraph 5.2.5.2. now says that the activated system must avoid a collision with a “cutting-in vehicle”, instead of a “cutting in vehicle”. In the definition of Vrel, “Relative velocity” now starts with a capital letter.
Emergency braking logic signal (para. 5.3.4.)
The logic signal indicating emergency braking must now be as specified in UN Regulation No. 13-H or 13, as appropriate. Before this supplement, paragraph 5.3.4. referred to UN Regulation No. 13-H.
Sensing requirements (paras. 7.1., 7.1.2. and 7.1.5.)
In paragraph 7.1., item (b) now reads “Along the full length of the vehicle or combination and up to the limit of the lateral detection range”. Under paragraph 7.1.2., the declared lateral detection range must cover the full width of the lanes immediately left and right “of the vehicle or combination”. Before, it said “of the vehicle”. In paragraph 7.1., the most notable other requirements that it is without prejudice to are now paragraphs 5.1.1. and 5.1.2. Where the ALKS can operate with a vehicle combination, paragraph 7.1.5. now requires a demonstration to the Technical Service at the time of type approval. The manufacturer must show the strategies implemented to make sure that the sensing capability is always sufficient for the length of trailer attached.
Emergency and enforcement vehicles (paras. 2.5. and 5.1.2.)
The activated system must comply with traffic rules relating to the DDT in the country of operation, now “including responding to emergency/enforcement vehicles” (para. 5.1.2.). In the definition of “Unplanned event” (para. 2.5.), the examples now follow the words “This may include:”. The examples now name “approaching emergency vehicles/enforcement vehicles” and “missing lane markings”, and “(collision)” after “load falling from truck” is deleted. Before this supplement, they named an “approaching emergency vehicle” and a “missing lane marking”.
Retrievability of data (paras. 8.4.3. to 8.4.3.3.)
Paragraph 8.4.3. is replaced by the heading “Retrievability of data” and paragraphs 8.4.3.1. to 8.4.3.3. Under paragraph 8.4.3.1., for vehicles of Category M1 and N1, the data elements listed in paragraph 8.3.1. must be retrievable even after an impact. The impact severity level is set by UN Regulations Nos. 94, 95 or 137, as applicable. For Categories M2, M3, N2 and N3 (para. 8.4.3.2.), the data elements listed in paragraph 8.3.1 must be retrievable even after an impact. To demonstrate that capability, either (a) and (b) apply, or (c) applies. Under (c), the manufacturer demonstrates fulfilling the requirements of paragraph 8.4.3.1.

Q3Who is affected
Vehicle manufacturer
- If you seek ALKS approval for vehicles of Categories M or N other than M1, check them against this Regulation.
- For M2/M3 // N2/N3, apply the new minimum time gap and minimum following distance values.
- Where ALKS can operate with a vehicle combination, demonstrate at type approval strategies keeping sensing always sufficient for trailer length.
- For Categories M2, M3, N2 and N3, demonstrate data retrievability after an impact by (a) and (b), or by (c).
- Implement the emergency braking logic signal as specified in UN Regulation No. 13-H or 13, as appropriate.
Component supplier
- If you supply ALKS sensing systems, be ready for coverage along the full length of the vehicle or combination.
- If you supply data storage devices for M2, M3, N2 or N3, prepare for the mechanical shock in item (a).
Technical service / Approval authority
- Be ready for demonstrations of sensing strategies for the trailer length where the ALKS can operate with a vehicle combination.
- For Categories M2, M3, N2 and N3, be ready for the mounting demonstration and documentation under (b).
