Why
  • It is proposed to move all provisions related to tyre abrasion into a separate UN Regulation.
  • The year references to the latest international standard specifications ASTM F2872-25, F2871-25 and F3678-25 are updated.
  • The expert from ETRTO proposed a correction to the 04 series of amendments (GRBP-82-27). This proposal covers paragraphs 1.1.1. and 1.1.1.1. of Annex 5, part (b).

Abrasion provisions deleted (paras. 1.3., 2.21., 3.1.1.1., 5.7. to 5.10.; Annex 1, items 8.6. and 8.6.1.)

Paragraph 1.1. no longer says that the Regulation also applies to C1 tyres in new state with regard to their abrasion. Deleted paragraph 1.3. applied to class C1 tyres, except ice grip tyres and tyres having a nominal rim diameter code ≤ 13. For these tyres, approval had to be supplemented with information on the abrasion level according to paragraphs 5.7 to 5.9. The abrasion definitions in paragraph 2.21., paragraphs 3.1.1.1. and 5.7. to 5.10. and Annex 1 items 8.6. and 8.6.1. are also deleted. From 1 January 2027, paragraph 5.9. required the manufacturer to communicate the tyre abrasion level during the approval of new type of class C1 tyres. In paragraph 3.2.1., the list of performances for the details of the major features no longer includes tyre abrasion.

This Regulation applies to new pneumatic tyres of classes C1, C2 and C3 in new state with regard to their sound emissions, and rolling resistance, and in new and in worn state with regard to adhesion performance on wet surfaces (wet adhesion). It also applies to C1 tyres in new state with regards to their abrasion as defined in paragraph 1.3. of this UN Regulation. It does not, however, apply to:
In the case of class C1 tyres, except ice grip tyres and tyres having a nominal rim diameter code ≤ 13, approval shall be supplemented with information on the abrasion level according to paragraphs 5.7 to 5.9 of this Regulation.

Annex 10 on the abrasion performance of class C1 tyres deleted

Annex 10, “Procedure for determining the abrasion performance of tyres of class C1”, is deleted with all its appendices. Deleted text includes test method (a) using vehicle on public open roads and test method (b) using indoor drum.

ASTM standards for the SRTT16C, SRTT19.5 and SRTT19.5 siped (para. 2.18.)

Paragraph 2.18. now refers to F2872 – 25 for the SRTT16C, F2871 – 25 for the SRTT19.5 and F3678 – 25 for the SRTT19.5 siped. Before, these were F2872 – 19, F2871 – 23 and F3678 – 23. An SRTT is a tyre that is produced, controlled and stored in accordance with the standards of ASTM International.

F2872 – 19 25 for the size 225/75R16C and referred to as "SRTT16C";",

Wetted track friction ranges by tyre class and SRTT (Annex 5, part (b), paras. 1.1.1. and 1.1.1.1.)

Under paragraph 1.1.1., the class of the candidate tyre and the method (trailer or vehicle) decide how the wetted track surface friction value is established. Its table gives μpeak ranges (trailer method) and BFC ranges (vehicle method) by tyre class and SRTT. For example, for C2 tyres and the SRTT16C, the ranges are 0.44 – 0.77 (trailer method) and 0.36 – 0.69 (vehicle method). Before, the text of paragraph 1.1.1. was “Standard Reference Test Tyre method”, and text on a method that uses the SRTT16 is deleted. In paragraph 1.1.1.1., “exceeds 4 per cent” becomes “is greater than 4 per cent” for the coefficient of variation CVµ. The µpeak, corr limits now read “greater than or equal to 0.65 and less than or equal to 0.90”, with the same values as before.

Standard Reference Test Tyre methodThe surface friction value for the wetted track shall be established by one or other of the following methods according to the class of the candidate tyre and the method (trailer or vehicle).
Tyre class SRTT Trailer method μpeak range Vehicle method BFC range C2, C3 SRTT16 0.65 – 0.90 - C2 SRTT16C 0.44 – 0.77 0.36 – 0.69 C3 SRTT19.5, SRTT22.5 0.51 – 0.67 0.35 – 0.61 C3 SRTT19.5 siped, SRTT22.5 siped 0.52 – 0.68 0.36 – 0.62

Q2Why it changed

Proposed by
Task Force Tyre Abrasion; experts from the European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation (ETRTO)
Working party
GRBP, 83rd session

Reasons

  • It is proposed to move all provisions related to tyre abrasion into a separate UN Regulation. ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRBP/2025/27 is a proposal for a new UN Regulation on the approval of tyres with regard to abrasion performance.

  • Proposer's reason (informal document GRBP-83-48-Rev.1)

Supplement 2 introduced new provisions for the track characterization and a new paragraph 1.1.1. in Annex 5, part (b). With document ECE/TRANS/WP.29/2025/76, an essential part of these provisions was accidentally deleted. The aim is to reinsert the text of Supplement 2 and to make the changes in paragraph 1.1.1.1. as they were intended originally.

Submitted by Experts of ETRTO. Working party adoption: ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRBP/83, para. 24.
