The approval of compression ignition (C.I.) engines with regard to the emission of visible pollutants II. The approval of motor vehicles with regard to the installation of C.I. engines of an approved type III. The approval of motor vehicles equipped with C.I. engines with regard to the emission of visible pollutants by the engine IV. The measurement of power of C.I. engine.
UN R24 — Supplement 5 to the 03 series of amendments
Supplement 4 → 5
- What changed
- Paragraphs 2.2., 4.1.5. and 4.2.1.2. now also refer to UN Regulation No. 85 for net power and the engine tests.
- New Annex 4 paragraph 3.1.6.: at the manufacturer's request, engine power can alternatively be measured in accordance with Annex 5 to UN Regulation No. 85. New paragraph 3.3.3. alternatively allows, at the manufacturer's request, the use of the provisions of that Annex 5.
- Several lists now label their items (a), (b) and so on. Several tables show units in square brackets.
- Why
- The test to establish the engine power curve should be identical between UN Regulations No. 24 and No. 85.
- References to UN Regulation No. 85 as an alternative are proposed to reduce the burden of always reproducing its updates in UN Regulation No. 24.
- Other amendments are proposed to bring the format of UN Regulation No. 24 up to date.
Q1What changed45 changes
Net power and engine tests under UN Regulation No. 85 (paras. 2.2., 4.1.5. and 4.2.1.2.)
“Net power” now means the power of a C.I. engine as defined in Annex 10 or in paragraph 2.3 of UN Regulation No. 85. Paragraph 4.1.5. applies when determining the emission of visible pollutants. The power and fuel consumption of the same engine must then be measured according to Annex 10 or Annex 5 to UN Regulation No. 85. In paragraph 4.2.1.2., the engine tests by the technical service are those described in Annex 10 or Annex 5 to UN Regulation No. 85. The engine must correspond in all aspects to the description report. A footnote now says “Net power according to Annex 10 to this UN Regulation or Annex 5 to UN Regulation No. 85.”
Alternatives with Annex 5 to UN Regulation No. 85 (Annex 4, paras. 3.1.6. and 3.3.3.)
New paragraph 3.1.6. of Annex 4 applies alternatively and regardless of the requirements set out in paragraphs 3.1.4. and 3.1.5. At the request of manufacturer, the power of the engine can be measured in accordance with Annex 5 to UN Regulation No. 85. Paragraphs 3.1.6. and 3.1.7. become paragraphs 3.1.7. and 3.1.8. New paragraph 3.3.3. applies alternatively and regardless of the requirements set out in paragraphs 3.3.1. and 3.3.2. At the request of manufacturer, the provisions of Annex 5 to UN Regulation No. 85 can be used.
Earlier text of paragraph 3.3.3. on turbo-charged engines
In this version, the earlier text of paragraph 3.3.3. is no longer there. That text applied when a turbo-charged engine is fitted with a system which allows compensating the ambient conditions temperature and altitude. At the request of the manufacturer, the correction factor αa or αd had to be set to the value of 1. Annex 10 has the same text.
Units in square brackets in tables (Annexes 1, 2 and 7)
Tables in Annex 1, Annex 2 and Annex 7 now show units in square brackets, for example “[rpm]” and “[kW]” instead of “(rpm)” and “(kW)”. The Annex 7 table no longer shows “m -2”. In Annex 7, “Notes” is now “Note:”.
Line on the power absorbed by the fan
This version no longer has the line “For engine type approval, power absorbed by the fan during the tests: kW”.
List item labels and punctuation (paras. 2.7.1., 7.3., 15.3.1. and Annex 10, para. 5.1.2.)
The list items in paragraphs 7.3. and 15.3.1. and in paragraph 5.1.2. of Annex 10 now have the labels (a), (b), (c) and so on. The items of the list in paragraph 2.7.1. now end with a comma.
Other wording and spelling changes
Paragraph 2.7.1. now reads “Either the highest of the following three engine speeds:” instead of “either the higest of the following three engine speedst”. Other changes are in capital letters, full stops after paragraph numbers and the spelling “with” instead of “vith” in a footnote.

- GRPE, 78th session (January 2019)
Reasons
The test to establish the engine power curve is necessary for the diesel smoke test. This test should be identical between UN Regulations No. 24 and No. 85.

“The test to establish the engine power curve, which is necessary for the diesel smoke test should be identical between UN Regulations No. 24 and No. 85.”
“The expert from OICA introduced ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRPE/2019/6 that aligns the provisions of the 03 series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 24 with UN Regulation No. 85 on engine power measurement.”
The proposal inserts references to UN Regulation No. 85 as an alternative. This is to reduce the burden of always reproducing updates to UN Regulation No. 85 in UN Regulation No. 24.
