UN R24 — Supplement 6 to the 03 series of amendments
Supplement 5 → 6
- What changed
- An approval to the 06 and above series of UN Regulation No. 49 is considered to demonstrate compliance for visible pollutants (para. 1.1.4.).
- New paragraph 1.1.4.1. says that paragraphs 6.1. and 24.1. apply, and also the provisions for expressing an adsorption coefficient.
- Why
- The proposal adds a new paragraph to the scopes of the Regulation to make its applicability clearer.
- The proposal says that engines certified to the 06 series of UN Regulation No. 49 (Euro VI) have no smoke.
Q1What changed3 changes
Equivalent approvals to UN Regulation No. 49 (para. 1.1.4.)
New paragraph 1.1.4. has the title “Equivalent approvals”. An approval to the 06 and above series of UN Regulation No. 49 is considered to demonstrate compliance with this Regulation for visible pollutants. It says that C.I. engines and vehicles with C.I. engines approved to this series have no visible pollutant emissions under paragraph 6.
Applicable provisions and adsorption coefficient (para. 1.1.4.1.)
New paragraph 1.1.4.1. says that the provisions of paragraphs 6.1. and 24.1. apply. The provisions for expressing an adsorption coefficient in m-1 (paragraphs 5.4.3., 5.4.4. and 23.4.3.) also apply. They apply together with the provisions for the approval mark in UN Regulation No. 49. The applicable adsorption coefficient is XM + 0.5 according to Annex 5, paragraph 3., where XM is zero in this case.

Engines certified to the 06 series of UN Regulation No. 49 (Euro VI) have no smoke. They are either C.I. engines with DPF or S.I. engines, which by principle have no smoke.

“However, engines certified with UN Regulation 49-06 series (corresponding to Euro VI) have no smoke.”
“They are either CI-engines with DPF or SI-engines which, by principle, have no smoke.”
C.I. engines with DPF have smoke emissions less than 0.5 m-1 during the free acceleration test. This is true even with a broken filter and/or a type A or B OBD fault code. At the steady state test, their smoke emissions are almost zero. The permitted production variability together with measurement inaccuracy is 0.5 m-1.
