UN R43 Supplement 10 (01 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 43 (ECE R43) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of safety glazing materials and their installation on vehicles.
UN R43 — Supplement 10 to the 01 series of amendments
Supplement 9 → 10
- What changed
- The definition of “Glass-plastics” (para. 2.5.) now excludes safety-glass faced with plastics material defined under paragraph 2.4.
- In the test table of paragraph 8.2.1.2., the abrasion entry for flexible plastics changes from “A16/6.1” to “-”.
- Why
- Under the old text, it seems that toughened glass with plastic only on its inner face could meet both definitions in paragraphs 2.4. and 2.5.
- For flexible plastics, the table referred to abrasion specifications in Annex 16, paragraph 6.1, which addresses rigid plastic multiple glazed units.
- Abrasion tests seem not technically applicable to flexible plastics, and Annex 15 does not require them.
Q1What changed2 changes
Definition of “Glass-plastics” (para. 2.5.)
The definition of “Glass-plastics” now says “other than safety-glass faced with plastics material defined under paragraph 2.4.”. Thus safety-glass faced with plastics material, as paragraph 2.4. defines it, is not glass-plastics. The rest of the definition does not change.
Abrasion entry for flexible plastics in the test table (para. 8.2.1.2.)
In the test table of paragraph 8.2.1.2., the abrasion entry for flexible plastics is now “-” instead of “A16/6.1”. “A16/6.1” referred to the abrasion specifications in Annex 16, paragraph 6.1. In the same table, “Laminated rigid plastics” becomes “Laminated-rigid plastics” in one place, and “2,260g ball” becomes “2,260 g ball”.
Q2Why it changed
- Proposed by
- Expert from France
- Working party
- GRSG, 123rd session (March–April 2022)
Reasons
The amendment to paragraph 2.5. aims to clarify the classification of panes as “safety-glass faced with plastics material” or “glass-plastics”.
Source
“submits to GRSG experts the above proposal to clarify the classification of panes in "safety-glass faced with plastics material" and "glass-plastics".”
Under the old text, it seems that toughened glass with plastic only on its inner face could meet both definitions in paragraphs 2.4. and 2.5. This does not match the original intention.

“According to the current definitions, it seems that a "toughened-glass" under paragraph 2.1. only fitted with plastic material on its inner face could be considered as fulfilling both definitions of paragraphs 2.4. and 2.5.”
“which does not match the original intention.”
For flexible plastics, the table of paragraph 8.2.1.2. referred to abrasion specifications in Annex 16, paragraph 6.1. That paragraph addresses rigid plastic multiple glazed units.

“In paragraph 8.2.1.2., the tests listed in the table mention specifications of abrasion for flexible plastics under annex 16, paragraph 6.1 addressing rigid plastic multiple glazed units.”
Abrasion tests seem not technically applicable to flexible plastics. Annex 15, which focuses only on flexible plastic panes, does not require them.

“abrasion tests seem not technically applicable to flexible plastics and are not required in annex 15, only focusing on flexible plastic panes.”

Q3Who is affected
Vehicle manufacturer
- Check that the glazing names in your vehicle documents follow the amended definition of “glass-plastics” in paragraph 2.5.
Component supplier
- Check the class of each pane with plastic on its inner face under paragraphs 2.4. and 2.5.
- Update your test plans for flexible plastics: their abrasion entry in the table is now “-” instead of “A16/6.1”.
Technical service / Approval authority
- Check the classification of glass-plastics panes in new applications against paragraph 2.5. as amended.
