UN R43 — Supplement 11 to the 01 series of amendments

Supplement 10 → 11

Adopted at the WP.29 191st sessionEntry into force 2024-06-15
What changed
  • Opaque obscuration can now be exempted in Zone I, in limited areas where a sensing device is intended to be bonded to the windscreen.
  • New paragraph 9.2.5.2.4. defines this opaque obscuration with three new planes: P5 below, and P6 and P7 at the sides.
  • For windscreens of other categories of vehicles, the light transmission test in Zone I now excludes any opaque obscuration impinging on it.
Why
  • Trucks with open type loading trays need more opaque obscuration area in Zone I for the optimized installation of interior rear-view mirrors and other features.
  • The amendment aligns UN Regulation No. 43 with UN GTR No. 6, for which GRSG already adopted an amendment with the same purpose.

Q1What changed56 changes

Opaque obscuration for sensing devices in Zone I (paras. 9.2.5.2.3. to 9.2.5.2.4.1., new Figures 22 and 23)

Paragraph 9.2.5.2. defines the zones of windscreens for vehicles of categories M and N other than M1. New text in paragraph 9.2.5.2.3. states that opaque obscuration can be exempted in Zone I. These are limited areas where a sensing device, for example a rain-drop detector, is intended to be bonded to the inner side of the windscreen. New paragraph 9.2.5.2.4.1. covers any opaque obscuration bounded downwards by new plane P5 and laterally by new planes P6 and P7. New Figure 22 shows the determination of Zone I, and new Figure 23 shows the upper obscuration area on a left-hand steering control vehicle. In the text of planes P1 to P4, only the dash and some capital letters change.

In addition, opaque obscuration can be exempted in Zone I. It is the limited areas where it is intended that a sensing device, e.g. a rain-drop detector, rear view mirror or autonomous sensors, will be bonded to the inner side of the windscreen. The opaque obscuration where such devices may be applied is defined in paragraph 9.2.5.2.4. of this annex.

Test area of the light transmission test (para. 9.1.2.2.)

For windscreens of other categories of vehicles, the test in Zone I now excludes any opaque obscuration impinging on it. For windscreens of N1 vehicles, the words “excluding any opaque obscuration impinging on it” now come at the end of the sentence, after the Zone I option. The N1 sentence now refers to Test Area B defined in Annex 21 instead of Annex 18. In the sentences for M1 windscreens and for tractors and construction-site vehicles, only capital letters change.

For the windscreens of M1 vehicles Vehicles the test shall be carried out in test area Test Area B defined in Annex 21, paragraph Paragraph 2.3., excluding any opaque obscuration impinging on it.
For the windscreens of N1 vehiclesVehicles, the manufacturer may request that the same test may be carried out either in test area Test Area B defined in Annex 18, paragraph  21, Paragraph 2.3., , or in the Zone I defined in Paragraph 9.2.5.2.3. of this annex, excluding any opaque obscuration impinging on it, or in the zone I defined in paragraph 9.2.5.2.3. of this annex.

Renumbered figures (Figures 22 to 35 become Figures 24 to 37)

The former Figures 22 to 35 are now Figures 24 to 37. The references to these figures in the text change in the same way, for example in paragraphs 10.4.1., 10.4.2. and 11.2.4.3. In these paragraphs, only the figure numbers change.

An illuminated 'ring' target whose outer diameter, D, subtends an angle of n minutes of arc at a point situated at x metres (Figure 22(a24(a)), or
An illuminated 'ring and spot' target whose dimensions are such that the distance D from a point on the edge of the spot to the nearest point on the inside of the circle subtends an angle of n minutes of arc at a point situated at x metres (Figure 22(b24(b)), where

Updated R.E.3 reference in footnote 17

Footnote 17 now refers to document ECE/TRANS/WP.29/78/Rev.7 instead of TRANS/WP.29/78/Rev.2. It no longer refers to Annex 7 of the Consolidated Resolution on the Construction of Vehicles (R.E.3). It now gives the web address https://unece.org/transport/vehicle-regulations/wp29/resolutions.

Q2Why it changed

Proposed by
Expert from the Republic of Korea
Working party
GRSG, 125th session (March 2023)

Reasons

  • The proposal aims at the optimized installation of interior rear-view mirrors and other safety and convenience features on trucks with open type loading trays. Examples are a Lane Departure Warning System and Autonomous Vehicle Sensors. For this purpose, an additional opaque obscuration area in Zone I must be allowed.

“For the optimized installation of interior rear-view mirrors and various safety and convenience features (e.g. Lane Departure Warning System and Autonomous Vehicle Sensors) of trucks with open type loading trays”
“it is necessary to allow an additional opaque obscuration area from the Zone I of the current text of the UN Regulation”
  • For the same purpose, GRSG already adopted an amendment to UN GTR No. 6 at its 119th session. The proposal aligns UN Regulation No. 43 with Amendment 3 of UN GTR No. 6. The alignment concerns the exemption of a possible opaque obscuration area from Zone I on windscreens of M2, M3 and N category vehicles.

Q3Who is affected

Vehicle manufacturer

  • Where Zone I applies to the windscreen, check sensor obscuration in Zone I against paragraph 9.2.5.2.4.1.
  • Where you request the N1 test in Test Area B under paragraph 9.1.2.2., refer to Annex 21.
  • Update documents that quote paragraph 9.1.2.2. or the old Figures 22 to 35.

Component supplier

  • Check opaque obscuration areas for bonded sensing devices against paragraph 9.2.5.2.4.1. and Figure 23.
  • Update test documents that refer to Figures 22 to 35 with the new numbers 24 to 37.

Technical service / Approval authority

  • Check that your light transmission test in Zone I excludes opaque obscuration for windscreens of other vehicle categories.
  • When you assess opaque obscuration in Zone I, use paragraph 9.2.5.2.4.1. and Figure 23.
