UN R134 — 01 series of amendments
Changes from 00 series of amendments (supplement 3)
- What changed
- New paragraph 7.1.7. requires labels as specified in Annex 6 on M2/N2 and M3/N3 vehicles equipped with a compressed hydrogen system.
- Annex 6 sets the label colours, a sticker width of at least 110 mm and a sticker height of at least 80 mm.
- From 1 September 2024, Contracting Parties need not accept approvals to the original version, except for vehicles/vehicle systems not affected by 01 series changes.
- Why
- The labelling is to help emergency services determine the approach of these vehicles in case of a fire.
- The proposal seeks consistency with UN Regulations Nos. 67 and 110 for the installation of labels, and with ISO 17840-4 for their appearance.
- Extension of the scope to N2/N3 vehicles is necessary due to the wide variety of these vehicles nowadays.

Identification of hydrogen fuelled vehicles (para. 7.1.7.)
New paragraph 7.1.7. requires labels as specified in Annex 6 on M2/N2 and M3/N3 vehicles equipped with a compressed hydrogen system. The labels must be placed on the front of the vehicle and on its left and right sides. On each side, the label must be in the vicinity of a front door, if available. If there is no front door available, the label must be placed on the first third of the vehicle length. Vehicles of category M2 and M3 must also have a label fixed to the rear of the vehicle.
Label for hydrogen vehicles of categories M2/N2 and M3/N3 (Annex 6)
New Annex 6 gives the provisions for a label for hydrogen vehicles of categories M2/N2 and M3/N3. The label must be weather resistant, and its layout and symbols must be in accordance with ISO 17840-4:2018. The centre zone indicates the first energy source and the upper zone the second energy source. The left zone indicates the gas behaviour due to density, and the right zone the state of aggregation of stored gaseous fuel. The background must be light blue, RGB code 0, 176, 240, and the border, letters and symbols white reflecting. The sticker width must be at least 110 mm and the sticker height at least 80 mm.
Transitional provisions (paras. 13. to 13.6.)
Contracting Parties applying this Regulation must not refuse to grant or accept 01 series approvals once that series officially enters into force. As from 1 September 2022, Contracting Parties applying this Regulation are not obliged to accept original-version approvals first issued on or after that date. Until 1 September 2024, Contracting Parties applying this Regulation must accept original-form approvals first issued before 1 September 2022. As from 1 September 2024, Contracting Parties applying this Regulation are not obliged to accept approvals issued to the original version. Notwithstanding paragraphs 13.2 and 13.4, Contracting Parties applying this Regulation must continue to accept original-form approvals for vehicles/vehicle systems not affected by 01 series changes. Contracting Parties applying this Regulation must not refuse to grant approvals according to any preceding series of amendments or extension thereof.
Approval number and approval marks (para. 4.2. and Annex 2)
Paragraph 4.2. now says that an approval number must be assigned to each type approved in accordance with Schedule 4 of the Agreement (E/ECE/TRANS/505/Rev.3). The earlier text on the first two digits and on the reuse of numbers by the same Contracting Party is deleted from paragraph 4.2. In Annex 2, the notes under both approval mark examples now refer to the 01 series of amendments instead of the original form. These notes now also say “UN Regulation” instead of “Regulation”.
Q2Why it changed
- Proposed by
- Expert from the Netherlands
- Working party
- GRSP, 68th session (December 2020)
Reasons
Identification provisions for gaseous and liquefied fuels are already laid down for M2 and M3 vehicles in UN Regulations Nos. 67 and 110. For the installation of labels, the proposal seeks consistency with these two Regulations.

“Provisions for identification of Gaseous and Liquified fuels have been laid down in UN Regulations for Liquified Petroleum Gas fuelled M2 and M3 vehicles (UN Regulation No. 67, paragraph 17.1.8., including Annex 16 for details)”
“Compressed Natural Gas/Liquid Natural Gas fuelled M2 and M3 vehicles (UN Regulation No. 110, paragraph 18.1.8., including Annex 6 and 7 for details)”
“For the installation of labels this proposal seeks consistency with UN Regulations Nos. 67 and 110.”
The additional labelling is to help emergency services determine the approach of these vehicles in case of a fire. Compressed and liquefied gases behave differently in fire conditions.

Extension of the scope to N2/N3 vehicles is necessary due to the wide variety of these vehicles nowadays. In the past, these vehicles were usually equipped with a diesel-powered driveline.
