UN R134 Supplement 3 (02 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 134 (ECE R134) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of motor vehicles and their components with regard to the safety-related performance of Hydrogen-Fuelled Vehicles (HFCV).
UN R134 — Supplement 3 to the 02 series of amendments
Supplement 2 → 3
- What changed
- In paragraph 7.1.1.5., the list of fuelling receptacle specifications is now H35, H35MF or H70, instead of H35, H35HF or H70.
- The geometry of the fuelling receptacle of compressed hydrogen gas vehicles must be in accordance with ISO 17268:2020 or ISO 17268-1:2025.
- Before this supplement, the paragraph named ISO 17268:2020 as the standard for this geometry.
- Why
- According to the proposer, ISO 17268-1:2025 includes new technologies to allow higher flow rate, such as H35MF.
- Some H35HF nozzles could be mated with an H70 receptacle, which may potentially result in overheating of the container. ISO 17268-1:2025 removed H35HF to prevent this incorrect assembly.
Q1What changed1 change
Fuelling receptacle geometry: H35MF and ISO 17268-1:2025 (para. 7.1.1.5.)
For compressed hydrogen gas vehicles, the fuelling receptacle geometry must be compatible with H35, H35MF or H70, depending on nominal working pressure and specific application. The geometry must also be in accordance with international standard ISO 17268:2020 or ISO 17268-1:2025. Before this supplement, the geometry had to conform to ISO 17268:2020 and be compatible with specification H35, H35HF or H70.
Q2Why it changed
- Proposed by
- OICA
- Working party
- GRSP, 77th session (May 2025)
Reasons
Reasons given by the proposer: OICA, in informal document GRSP-77-46-Rev.1. GRSP adopted GRSP-77-46-Rev.1 and asked the secretariat to submit it as the proposal for supplement 3 to the 02 series of amendments to the November 2025 sessions of WP.29 and AC.1 (ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRSP/77, para. 30).
ISO 17268:2020 will be replaced by ISO 17268-1:2025 in the middle of 2025. ISO 17268-1:2025 includes new technologies to allow higher flow rate, such as H35MF and a slightly updated design of H70.

“ISO 17268:2020 will be replaced by ISO 17268-1:2025 in the middle of 2025 where new technologies to allow higher flow rate, such as H35MF and slightly updated design of H70, are included in the standard.”
To allow these new technologies, the reference to the updated standard should be added as an alternative. Within the same specification code, receptacles according to the 2025 standard must be compatible with nozzles that comply with the 2020 standard or vice versa.

“In order to allow such new technologies introduced in ISO 17268-1:2025, the reference to the updated standard should be added as an alternative.”
“Within the same specification code, the fuelling receptacles according to the 2025 standard shall have the compatibility with the nozzles complying with the 2020 standard or vice versa.”
During the development of ISO 17268-1:2025, a safety concern of H35HF was identified. Some H35HF nozzles could be mated with an H70 receptacle, which may potentially result in overheating of the container. For this reason, ISO 17268-1:2025 adopted a new specification H35MF and removed H35HF to prevent such unintended incorrect assembly.
