UN R160 — Supplement 1 to the 00 series of amendments

Base text → Supplement 1

Adopted at the WP.29 186th sessionEntry into force 2022-10-08
What changed
  • New paragraph 2.29. defines “Rollover” as any vehicle rotation of 90 degrees or more about any true longitudinal or lateral axis.
  • In Annex 4, Table 1, anti-lock braking system activity now has the states “Faulted, Non-Engaged, Engaged”, and stability control has “Faulted, On, Off, Engaged”.
  • In Annex 4, Table 1, the recording interval of normal acceleration (post-crash) and vehicle roll angle is now “0 to at least 250 ms”.
Why
  • A definition of “Rollover” is necessary to support the addition of rollover specific recording events.
  • The term “Engaged” is aligned with current Part 563 EDR regulations.
  • The change to paragraphs 2.14. and 2.15. is to clarify that the required number of power cycles are those determined by the EDR ECU.

Q1What changed42 changes

New definition of “Rollover” and renumbering (paras. 2.29. to 2.54.)

New paragraph 2.29. defines “Rollover” as any vehicle rotation of 90 degrees or more about any true longitudinal or lateral axis. The former paragraphs 2.29. to 2.53. are now paragraphs 2.30. to 2.54.

“Rollover” means any vehicle rotation of 90 degrees or more about any true longitudinal or lateral axis.
2.29.2.30.

Definitions of “Vehicle roll rate” and “Vehicle yaw rate” deleted

The definitions of “Vehicle roll rate” and “Vehicle yaw rate” are deleted. Before this supplement, they were paragraphs 2.54. and 2.55.

"Vehicle roll rate" means the change in angle over time of the vehicle about its X-axis as determined by the sensing system.
"Vehicle yaw rate" means the change in angle over time of the vehicle about its Z-axis as determined by the sensing system.

Ignition cycle counts as determined by the EDR ECU (paras. 2.14. and 2.15.)

Paragraphs 2.14. and 2.15. now add “as determined by the EDR ECU” after “power mode cycles”. Paragraph 2.15. also adds the word “of” after “the number (count)”.

"Ignition cycle, crash" means the number (count) of power mode cycles as determined by the EDR ECU at the time when the crash event occurred since the first use of the EDR.
"Ignition cycle download" means the number (count) of power mode cycles as determined by the EDR ECU at the time when the data was downloaded since the first use of the EDR.

Anti-lock braking activity and system state terms (para. 2.1., Annex 4, Table 1)

Paragraph 2.1. now defines “Anti-lock braking activity” instead of “ABS activity”, and the words “(ABS)” are deleted. In Annex 4, Table 1, “ABS activity” is now “Anti-lock braking system activity”. Its minimum range and resolution are now “Faulted, Non-Engaged, Engaged” instead of “Faulted, Active, Intervening”. For stability control, they are now “Faulted, On, Off, Engaged” instead of “Faulted, On, Off, Intervening”. A new footnote says that “engaged” also means “actively controlling” or “actively intervening”, “non-engaged” also means “on but not controlling”, and “off” also means “deactivated”. The footnote “Manufacturers can include other system states” is deleted.

"ABS Anti-lock braking activity" means the anti-lock brake system (ABS) is actively controlling the vehicle's brakes.

Recording interval and rollover start time (Annex 4, Table 1)

In Annex 4, Table 1, the recording interval of normal acceleration (post-crash) is now “0 to at least 250 ms” instead of “-1.0 to 5.0 sec”. For vehicle roll angle, it is now “0 to at least 250 ms” instead of “-1.0 up to 5.0 sec”. The footnote “May be recorded in any time duration; -1.0 to 5.0 sec is suggested” is deleted. A new footnote says: “For rollover events the time at which the event is determined to have started as defined by the manufacturer”. The data sample rate of normal acceleration (post-crash) is now “10” instead of “10 Hz”.

For rollover events the time at which the event is determined to have started as defined by the manufacturer.
May be recorded in any time duration; -1.0 to 5.0 sec is suggested

Front passenger footnote and data element names (Annex 4, Table 1)

A new footnote in Annex 4, Table 1 says “List this element n times, once for each device”. Several front passenger data elements, for example “Safety belt status, front passenger”, refer to this footnote. The data element “Passenger air bag suppression status” is now “Passenger air bag suppression status, front”. The data element “Complete file recorded (yes, no)” is now “Complete file recorded”.

List this element n times, once for each device.

Wording changes (paras. 1.3., 2.52. and 5.3.2.)

Paragraph 1.3. deletes the word “and” before “date and time of an event”. The definition of “X-direction” in paragraph 2.52. now spells “centreline” instead of “centerline”. Paragraph 5.3.2. now uses “subsequent events” instead of “subsequent event” in the rule on locking the memory for the event.

The following data elements are excluded from the scope: VIN, associated vehicle details, location/positioning data, information of the driver, and date and time of an event.
"X-direction" means in the direction of the vehicle’s X-axis, which is parallel to the vehicle's longitudinal centerlinecentreline. The X-direction is positive in the direction of forward vehicle travel.

Q2Why it changed

Proposed by
Informal Working Group on EDR/DSSAD
Working party
GRSG, 122nd session (October 2021)

Reasons

  • A definition of “Rollover” is necessary to support the addition of rollover specific recording events.

    Source
“Incorporation of a definition for “Rollover” is necessary to support the addition of rollover specific recording events.”
  • The change to paragraphs 2.14. and 2.15. is to clarify that the required number of power cycles are those determined by the EDR ECU.

    Source
“Proposed amendment is necessary to clarify that the required number of power cycles are those determined by the EDR ECU.”
  • The term “Engaged” is aligned with current Part 563 EDR regulations. It was felt that the term “active” could be misinterpreted as meaning “actively intervening”, when it is intended to mean “able to intervene but not actually intervening”. A footnote was deleted since this is a minimum set and manufacturers can always include other system states.

“The term “Engaged” is aligned with current Part 563 EDR regulations.”
“it was felt that the term “active” could be misinterpreted as meaning “actively intervening” when it is intended to mean “able to intervene but not actually intervening”.”
“footnote #12 was deleted since this is a minimum set and manufacturers can always include other system states.”
  • The footnote “List this element n times, once for each device” is necessary to account for the fact that there may be more than one front passenger seating position.

“Proposed amendment is necessary to account for the fact that there may be more than one front passenger seating position.”
  • Proposer's reason (informal document GRSG-122-36)

The new recording interval makes this requirement more objective by specifying a specific minimum time period. For rollover events, manufacturers employ a variety of triggering methods. For this reason, the manufacturer needs the ability to define the time at which the event is determined to have started.

Submitted by Informal Working Group on EDR/DSSAD. Working party adoption: ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRSG/101, para. 109.
