UN R160 Base text (02 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 160 (ECE R160) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of motor vehicles with regard to the Event Data Recorder.
UN R160 — 02 series of amendments
Changes from 01 series of amendments (supplement 1)
- What changed
- New paragraph 6. adds a component test: the EDR acceleration trace must stay in a +/- 10 per cent full-scale corridor.
- New paragraphs 12.6. to 12.10. are transitional provisions for the 02 series, with the dates 1 September 2024 and 1 September 2026.
- In Annex 4, Table 1, a new footnote relates the “+/- 10%” accuracy of post-crash lateral and longitudinal acceleration to the full range of the accelerometer. Another new footnote leaves the format of lateral acceleration in rollover to the manufacturer.
- Why
- The proposer said that acceleration sensor accuracy is difficult to check in crash tests, so the IWG on EDR/DSSAD agreed to a component test.
- The proposer said that the new procedure needs new measuring material for technical services and manufacturers, so it comes with transitional provisions.
- GRSG endorsed a revision of the 02 series proposal that aligns it fully with Supplement 2 to the original version and to the 01 series.
Q1What changed50 changes
New component test for acceleration data accuracy (paras. 6. to 6.1.4.)
A new paragraph 6. on verification procedures requires a component test for the accuracy of longitudinal and lateral acceleration data. The test fixture moves the EDR/airbag control module acceleration sensors with the sinusoidal motion a(t) = -40 * sin(πt/20), +/- 2g. The fixture needs an acceleration sensor of at least +/- 500g range and a data acquisition system that samples at 10kHz. The air bag electronic control unit/EDR must be mounted on the fixture as oriented in the vehicle. The fixture traces must go through a 150 Hz two pole Butterworth filter. They are then aligned with the EDR traces at the recorded air bag deployment signal time.
Pass condition: corridor and time shift (paras. 6.1.5. to 6.1.8.)
The EDR recorded acceleration trace must be fully in a corridor of +/- 10 per cent of the accelerometer full-scale range around the filtered fixture trace. For example, a +/- 100 g accelerometer gives +/- 10 g, and a new figure shows this corridor. The EDR trace can be time shifted up to +/- 2ms to align the data further. The acceleration data pass if the EDR trace is fully in the corridor, with or without the time shift. If the manufacturer’s algorithm strategy stops the recommended waveform from waking up the algorithm, the manufacturer may select or amplify a waveform. A waveform that is different must be given for review.
Accuracy of post-crash lateral and longitudinal acceleration (Annex 4, Table 1)
In Annex 4, Table 1, a new footnote now applies to the accuracy “+/- 10%” of lateral acceleration (post-crash) and longitudinal acceleration (post-crash). It says: “+/- 10 per cent of the full range of the accelerometer used in the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) containing the EDR function as specified in paragraph 6.1.5.”
Format of lateral acceleration in rollover events (Annex 4, Table 1)
In Annex 4, Table 1, a new footnote applies to “Rollover” in the row for lateral acceleration (post-crash). It says: “Format for lateral acceleration recorded in rollover is at the option of the manufacturer”.
Transitional provisions for the 02 series (paras. 12.6. to 12.10.)
New paragraphs 12.6. to 12.10. are the transitional provisions for the 02 series of amendments. From the official date of entry into force of the 02 series, Contracting Parties must not refuse to grant or accept 02 series approvals. From 1 September 2024, they are not obliged to accept 01 series approvals first issued after 1 September 2024. Until 1 September 2026, they must accept 01 series approvals first issued before 1 September 2024. From 1 September 2026, they are not obliged to accept 01 series approvals. Paragraph 12.10. keeps 01 series approvals for vehicles that the 02 series changes do not affect.
Renumbered paragraphs (former paras. 6. to 11.6.)
Former paragraphs 6. to 11.4. are now paragraphs 7. to 12.4. Former paragraph 11.5. is now 12.5., and it now refers to paragraph 12.4. instead of 11.4. Former paragraph 11.6. is now paragraph 12.11.
Approval number and approval mark (para. 4.2., Annex 3)
Paragraph 4.2. now says that an approval number is assigned to each approved type in accordance with Schedule 4 of the Agreement (E/ECE/TRANS/505/Rev.3). Before, it described the first two digits of the number. It also said that the same Contracting Party must not give the same number to another vehicle type. In Annex 3, the text under the approval mark now says that the first two digits (02) show the 02 series of amendments. The approval mark figure in Annex 3 also changed.
Q2Why it changed

- Expert from the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA)
- Working party
- GRSG, 125th session (March 2023)
Reasons
GRSG noted that the 02 series proposal had been revised. The revision aligns it fully with the provisions of Supplement 2 to the original version and Supplement 2 to the 01 series of amendments. GRSG endorsed this revision.
Sources (3)
“GRSG noted that the proposal of 02 series of amendments adopted at its last session in March, had been revised”
“to fully align it with the provisions introduced by Supplement 2 to the original version and Supplement 2 to the 01 series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 160”
“GRSG endorsed this revision.”
Proposer's reason (informal document GRSG-125-02-Rev.2)
It is difficult to check the accuracy of the acceleration sensor in crash tests. For this reason, the IWG on EDR/DSSAD agreed to use a component test. A time shift algorithm addresses differences in sampling rates that may exist between the EDR and the test bench.

Sources (2)
“Since it is difficult to verify the acceleration sensor accuracy in crash tests, the IWG EDR/DSSAD agreed to adopt a component test.”
“A time shifting algorithm was also specified to address the differences in sampling rates that may exist between the EDR and the test bench.”
Proposer's reason (informal document GRSG-125-02-Rev.2)
The new procedure needs new measuring material for both technical services and manufacturers. For this reason, it comes with transitional provisions. The proposer considered a period of two years reasonable.

“This supplementary verification procedure needs to be implemented with transitional provisions since it implies new measuring material for both the technical services and the manufacturers.”
“A period of two years seems reasonable in this case.”
Proposer's reason (informal document GRSG-125-04-Rev.1)
The acceleration data accuracy tolerance can be applied in multiple ways. This can lead to different interpretations by type-approval authorities. The IWG specified the tolerance as “+/- 10 per cent of the full range of the accelerometer used in the ECU containing the EDR function”.
Submitted by the expert from the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA). Working party adoption: ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRSG/104, para. 30.
Sources (3)
“There are multiple ways in which the acceleration data accuracy tolerance can be applied.”
“This can potentially lead to different interpretations when applied by type-approval authorities.”
“To resolve this the IWG specified that the currently specified accuracy tolerance be specified as "+/- 10 per cent of the full range of the accelerometer used in the ECU containing the EDR function".”
Proposer's reason (informal document GRSG-125-04-Rev.1)
In rollover events, lateral acceleration is not recorded with the sensors used for lateral air bag deployments. For this reason, the format requirements are not appropriate. A footnote makes it clear that the format for lateral acceleration in rollover events is at the option of the manufacturer.

“Since lateral acceleration in rollover events are not recorded using the same sensors as used for lateral air bag deployments, the format requirements are not appropriate”
“a footnote was added to clarify that the format for lateral acceleration in rollover events is at the option of the manufacturer.”
