UN R160 — Supplement 1 to the 01 series of amendments

Base text → Supplement 1

Adopted at the WP.29 186th sessionEntry into force 2022-10-08
What changed
  • New paragraph 2.42. defines “Rollover” as any vehicle rotation of 90 degrees or more about any true longitudinal or lateral axis.
  • In Annex 4, Table 1, normal acceleration (post-crash), vehicle roll angle and vehicle roll rate now have the recording interval “0 to at least 250 ms”.
  • In Annex 4, Table 1, several system states now use “Engaged”, for example “Faulted, On, Off, Engaged” for stability control.
Why
  • A definition of “Rollover” is necessary to support the addition of rollover specific recording events.
  • The term “Engaged” is aligned with current Part 563 EDR regulations.
  • A new footnote for front passengers is necessary because there may be more than one front passenger seating position.

Q1What changed88 changes

New definitions and renumbering (paras. 2.2. to 2.70.)

Paragraph 2. now has new definitions, for example “Rollover” in paragraph 2.42. and “Tyre Pressure Monitoring System” in paragraph 2.61. Paragraphs 2.6. to 2.11. define the automatically commanded steering function categories A, B1, B2, C, D and E. Other new definitions cover the accident emergency call system, adaptive cruise control and the advanced emergency braking system status. Further new definitions cover the corrective steering function, the emergency steering function and the lane departure warning system. Paragraph 2.23. defines “Far-side impact centre air bag deployment, time to deploy”. The former paragraphs 2.2. to 2.55. now have new numbers from 2.5. to 2.70.

"Accident Emergency Call System" means a system that is activated either automatically via in-vehicle sensors or manually, which carries, by means of public mobile wireless communications networks, a set of crash-related data and establishes an emergency audio channel between the occupants of the vehicle and an answering point.
“Adaptive cruise control” is a system which accelerates or decelerates the vehicle to automatically maintain a driver pre-set speed and driver pre-set gap distance from the vehicle in front.

Ignition cycle counts as determined by the EDR ECU (paras. 2.26. and 2.27.)

Paragraphs 2.26. and 2.27. now add “as determined by the EDR ECU” after “power mode cycles”.

"Ignition cycle, crash" means the number (count) of power mode cycles as determined by the EDR ECU at the time when the crash event occurred since the first use of the EDR.
"Ignition cycle download" means the number (count) of power mode cycles as determined by the EDR ECU at the time when the data was downloaded since the first use of the EDR.

Anti-lock braking activity and system state terms (para. 2.1., Annex 4, Table 1)

Paragraph 2.1. now defines “Anti-lock brake system activity” instead of “ABS activity”. In Annex 4, Table 1, anti-lock braking system activity now has the states “Faulted, Non-Engaged, Engaged” instead of “Faulted, Active, Intervening”. Stability control now has “Faulted, On, Off, Engaged” instead of “Faulted, On, Off, Intervening”, and traction control status now has the same states. Cruise control system status and adaptive cruise control status now use “Engaged, Faulted, Off, Non-engaged”. A new footnote says that “engaged” also means “actively controlling” or “actively intervening”, and “off” also means “deactivated”. The footnote “Manufacturers can include other system states” is deleted.

"ABS Anti-lock brake system activity" means the anti-lock brake system (ABS) is actively controlling the vehicle's brakes.

Status data elements and recorded events (Annex 4, Table 1)

In Annex 4, Table 1, advanced emergency braking system status now has the states “Faulted, Deactivated, On but Non-engaged, Warning but Non-engaged, Engaged”. The corrective and emergency steering function status elements now use “On but not engaged, Engaged”. The automatically commanded steering function status elements now use “Stand-By” and “Active” instead of “On but not controlling” and “On – Actively controlling”. A new footnote explains these states, for example “Standby – ACSF can’t control”. The “Event(s) recorded for” column now lists “Planar” and “Rollover” for several status elements, for example corrective steering function status. “Speed, vehicle indicated” is now also recorded for “Rollover” events.

Recording interval, rollover start time and roll rate (Annex 4, Table 1)

In Annex 4, Table 1, normal acceleration (post-crash), vehicle roll angle and vehicle roll rate now have the recording interval “0 to at least 250 ms”. Before, the interval was “-1.0 to 5.0 sec” or “-1.0 up to 5.0 sec”. The footnotes that said the data “may be recorded in any time duration” are deleted. A new footnote says: “For rollover events the time at which the event is determined to have started as defined by the manufacturer”. The resolution of vehicle roll rate is now “4 deg/sec” instead of “1 deg/sec”. Another new footnote says: “The manufacturer will indicate the direction of positive roll/yaw rate”.

Wording and data element names (paras. 1.3., 2.66. and 5.3.2., Annex 4)

Paragraph 1.3. deletes the word “and” before “date and time of an event”. Paragraph 2.66. now spells “centreline” instead of “centerline”. Paragraph 5.3.2. now uses “subsequent events” instead of “subsequent event”. In Annex 4, Table 1, some data element names no longer use acronyms, for example “Advanced emergency braking system status” instead of “AEBS status”. “Complete file recorded (yes, no)” is now “Complete file recorded”, and some data sample rates no longer show “Hz”.

The following data elements are excluded from the scope: VIN, associated vehicle details, location/positioning data, information of the driver, and date and time of an event.
"X-direction" means in the direction of the vehicle’s X-axis, which is parallel to the vehicle's longitudinal centerlinecentreline. The X-direction is positive in the direction of forward vehicle travel.

Q2Why it changed

Proposed by
Informal Working Group on EDR/DSSAD
Working party
GRSG, 122nd session (October 2021)

Reasons

  • Definitions for systems such as the lane departure warning system are necessary to support the addition of their associated data elements. A definition of “Rollover” is necessary to support the addition of rollover specific recording events.

    Sources (2)
“Incorporation of the above definitions are necessary to support the addition of their associated data elements.”
“Incorporation of a definition for “Rollover” is necessary to support the addition of rollover specific recording events.”
  • The term “Engaged” is aligned with current Part 563 EDR regulations. It was felt that the term “active” could be misinterpreted as meaning “actively intervening”, when it is intended to mean “able to intervene but not actually intervening”. A footnote was deleted since this is a minimum set and manufacturers can always include other system states. The traction control system states are revised to align with the terminology used in the stability control data element.

“The term “Engaged” is aligned with current Part 563 EDR regulations.”
“it was felt that the term “active” could be misinterpreted as meaning “actively intervening” when it is intended to mean “able to intervene but not actually intervening”.”
“Footnote #13 was deleted since this is a minimum set and manufacturers can always include other system states.”
“The minimum range and resolution system states are revised to align with the terminology used in the Stability Control data element.”
  • A new footnote for front passengers is necessary because there may be more than one front passenger seating position. A new footnote for rear passengers is necessary because there may be more than one row of rear passenger seating positions.

    Sources (2)
“Proposed amendment is necessary to account for the fact that there may be more than one front passenger seating position.”
“Proposed amendment is necessary to account for the fact that there may be more than one row of rear passenger seating positions.”
  • A resolution of 4 degrees per second for vehicle roll rate is more than sufficient to support post-crash analysis. It also allows the data to continue to be stored in one byte per sample.

“4 degrees per second is more than sufficient to support post-crash analysis and allows the data to continue to be stored in one byte per sample.”
  • Proposer's reason (informal document GRSG-122-37)

The new recording interval makes this requirement more objective by specifying a specific minimum time period. For rollover events, manufacturers employ a variety of triggering methods. For this reason, the manufacturer needs to define the time at which the event is determined to have started.

Submitted by Informal Working Group on EDR/DSSAD. Working party adoption: ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRSG/101, para. 109.
