UN R160 Supplement 2 (00 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 160 (ECE R160) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of motor vehicles with regard to the Event Data Recorder.

UN R160 — Supplement 2 to the 00 series of amendments

Supplement 1 → 2

Adopted at the WP.29 191st sessionEntry into force 2024-06-15
What changed
  • Annex 4, Table 1 has a new footnote to the “+/- 10%” accuracy of lateral and longitudinal acceleration (post-crash).
  • This footnote reads “+/- 10 per cent of the full range of the accelerometer used in the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) containing the EDR function”.
  • Another new footnote says that the format for lateral acceleration recorded in rollover is at the option of the manufacturer.
Why
  • The acceleration data accuracy tolerance can be applied in multiple ways, and this can potentially lead to different interpretations by type-approval authorities.
  • Lateral acceleration in rollover events is not recorded with the same sensors as for lateral air bag deployments, so the format requirements are not appropriate.

Q1What changed3 changes

New footnotes on acceleration accuracy and rollover format (Annex 4, Table 1)

Annex 4, Table 1 has two new footnotes. One footnote is on the “+/- 10%” accuracy of lateral and longitudinal acceleration (post-crash). It reads “+/- 10 per cent of the full range of the accelerometer used in the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) containing the EDR function”. The other footnote says that the format for lateral acceleration recorded in rollover is at the option of the manufacturer.

+/- 10 per cent of the full range of the accelerometer used in the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) containing the EDR function.

Q2Why it changed

Proposed by
Expert from the Informal Working Group on Event Data Recorder / Data Storage System for Automated Driving
Working party
GRSG, 125th session (March 2023)

Reasons

  • There are multiple ways to apply the acceleration data accuracy tolerance. This can potentially lead to different interpretations when type-approval authorities apply it. The IWG specified the tolerance as “+/- 10 per cent of the full range of the accelerometer used in the ECU containing the EDR function”.

    Sources (3)
“There are multiple ways in which the acceleration data accuracy tolerance can be applied.”
“This can potentially lead to different interpretations when applied by type-approval authorities.”
“To resolve this the IWG specified that the currently specified accuracy tolerance be specified as "+/- 10 per cent of the full range of the accelerometer used in the ECU containing the EDR function".”
  • Lateral acceleration in rollover events is not recorded with the same sensors as for lateral air bag deployments. For this reason, the format requirements are not appropriate. A footnote now makes clear that the format for lateral acceleration in rollover events is at the option of the manufacturer.

    Sources (2)
“Since lateral acceleration in rollover events are not recorded using the same sensors as used for lateral air bag deployments”
“the format requirements are not appropriate and thus a footnote was added to clarify that the format for lateral acceleration in rollover events is at the option of the manufacturer.”

Q3Who is affected

Vehicle manufacturer

  • Check that lateral and longitudinal acceleration (post-crash), if recorded, is accurate to “+/- 10 per cent of the full range of the accelerometer used in the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) containing the EDR function”.

Component supplier

  • No direct action for this role.

Technical service / Approval authority

  • Be ready to check lateral and longitudinal acceleration (post-crash), if recorded, against “+/- 10 per cent of the full range of the accelerometer used in the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) containing the EDR function”.
