UN R94 Supplement 1 (04 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 94 (ECE R94) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of vehicles with regard to the protection of the occupants, fuel system integrity and protection against electrical shock in the event of a frontal collision.
UN R94 — Supplement 1 to the 04 series of amendments
Base text → Supplement 1
- What changed
- The “Specific voltage condition” definition in paragraph 2.40. has a new Note 2. For pulsating DC voltages (alternating voltages without change of polarity), the DC threshold must be applied.
- The existing note of paragraph 2.40. is renumbered as Note 1.
- Why
- The expert from CLEPA introduced the proposal to align UN Regulations Nos. 94, 95, 137 and 153.
- The clarification of the “special voltage condition” definition aims to avoid misinterpretation in the isolation resistance test after exposure to water.
Q1What changed2 changes
DC threshold for pulsating DC voltages in the “Specific voltage condition” (para. 2.40.)
Paragraph 2.40. defines the “Specific voltage condition”. New Note 2 says that for pulsating DC voltages (alternating voltages without change of polarity), the DC threshold must be applied. The existing note of paragraph 2.40. is renumbered as Note 1.
Q2Why it changed

Reasons
The expert from CLEPA introduced the proposal to align UN Regulations Nos. 94, 95, 137 and 153.

Proposer's reason (informal document GRSP-69-41)
With document GRSP-69-04, CLEPA proposed to clarify the “special voltage condition” definition in the 03 series of UN Regulation No. 100. The aim was to avoid misinterpretation in the application of the isolation resistance test after exposure to water. According to CLEPA, this would be critical for certain 48V air cooled motor generators having an integrated AD/DC voltage. CLEPA says that the same clarification is necessary in all other UN Regulations with the same definition.
Submitted by Expert from CLEPA the European Association of Automotive Suppliers. Working party adoption: ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRSP/69, para. 47.

“CLEPA with document GRSP-69-04 proposed to amend the 03 series of Regulation 100 to clarify the definition 2.42 “special voltage condition””
“avoid mis-interpretation in the application of the isolation resistance test after exposure to water which would result critical for certain 48V air cooled motor generators having and integrated AD/DC voltage”
“Consequently it is necessary to introduce the same clarification in all other UN Regulations having the same “special voltage condition” definition.”

Q3Who is affected
Vehicle manufacturer
- Use the DC threshold for pulsating DC voltages (alternating voltages without change of polarity) in the specific voltage condition.
Component supplier
- Tell the vehicle manufacturer which of your circuits have pulsating DC voltages (alternating voltages without change of polarity).
Technical service / Approval authority
- Make sure that the DC threshold is applied to pulsating DC voltages (alternating voltages without change of polarity).
