UN R129 — Supplement 6 to the 03 series of amendments

Supplement 5 → 6

Adopted at the WP.29 185th sessionEntry into force 2022-06-22
What changed
  • New item (d) of paragraph 7.1.3. says that lateral impact tests must be performed on the test bench only, according to paragraph 6.6.4.1 Table 3.
  • For frontal and rear impacts, item (f) now requires the most upright and the most reclined child seating positions for each dummy and impact orientation.
  • In paragraph 7.2.8., a mass of 5 kg is now attached to the extremities of the bar, replacing a force of 50 ± 1 N.
Why
  • The proposal clarifies the application of the dynamic test procedures for Enhanced Child Restraint Systems and specifies the installation configurations to be tested.
  • The proposal aims to clarify the tests conducted in a consistent way by Technical Services.

Q1What changed18 changes

Which impact tests apply, and where (items (b) to (d) of para. 7.1.3.)

Paragraph 7.1.3. now has capital letters, and item (c) on rear impact tests changes only in letter case and end punctuation. Item (b) now excepts from lateral impact tests built in ECRS, Universal booster cushion ECRS and Specific vehicle booster cushion ECRS. Before, the exception was for built-in systems and booster cushions. New item (d): frontal and rear impacts must be performed on the test bench or in the vehicle bodyshell, according to paragraph 6.6.4.1 table 3. The third option for frontal and rear impacts is a complete vehicle, according to paragraph 7.1.3.3. Lateral impact tests must be performed on the test bench only, according to paragraph 6.6.4.1 Table 3.

Dynamic testing Testing for frontal, rear Frontal, Rear and lateral impactLateral Impact:
Lateral impact tests shall be performed on all Enhanced Child Restraint Systems enhanced child restraint systems within the scope of this regulation, except built-in for built in enhanced child restraint systems , Universal booster cushion Enhanced Child Restraint Systems and Specific vehicle booster cushions;cushion Enhanced Child Restraint Systems.

Positions for lateral impact tests (item (e))

Item (e) now says that for lateral impact tests, the ECRS must be tested in its most upright used position. If this upright position falls outside the Vehicle Seat Fixture, this position must still be chosen. The rule on the width position of the lateral shock absorbers is now a new paragraph with reworded conditions. It covers ECRS that fit into any of the vehicle seat fixtures where the lateral shock absorbers can be adjusted outside the Vehicle Seat Fixture. For ECRS that do not fit into any of the vehicle seat fixtures, a lateral test must be performed for each listed vehicle. The sentence “The lateral dynamic test(s) will be performed in this(ese) arrangement(s)” is deleted.

The ECRS For lateral impacts tests the Enhanced Child Restraint Systems shall be tested in its most upright used position. If this upright position falls outside the Vehicle Seat Fixture, this position shall still to be chosen. However with width positions outside the Seat Fixture, for the lateral test the width position of lateral shock absorbers that still fit in the Vehicle Seat Fixture shall be chosen;
For Enhanced Child Restraint Systems that fit into any of the vehicle seat fixtures where the lateral shock absorbers can be adjusted outside the Vehicle Seat Fixture, the width position of the lateral shock absorbers that still fit in the Vehicle Seat Fixture shall be chosen;

Side impact door panel position, new Figure 6 and renumbered Figure 7

For each test, the initial position of the side impact door panel relative to the bench must now be adjusted as shown in Figure 6. The adjustment follows the minimum distance between the vehicle's door panel and the centre of the seating position. New Figure 6 has the title “Minimum distance for lateral impact”. The former Figure 6 of paragraph 7.1.3.5.2.2. is renumbered as Figure 7, and the text on load cell 1 now refers to Figure 7.

For each test, the initial position of the side impact door panel relative to the bench shall be adjusted according to the minimum distance between the vehicle's door panel and the centre of the seating position as shown in Figure 6.

Child seating positions for frontal and rear impacts (item (f))

For frontal and rear impacts, item (f) now requires the most upright and the most reclined child seating positions for each dummy and impact orientation. Before, it was the child seating position representing the worst case for this dummy and impact orientation. The ECRS is still adjusted to the size of the dummy(ies) selected to cover the entire size range. If not yet covered by the previous configurations, the Technical Service may test the ECRS in a position that it defines. In that position, the ECRS fits in the Vehicle Seat Fixture.

For frontal and rear impacts, the tests shall be performed with the ECRS Ehanced Child Restraint Systems adjusted to the size of the dummy(ies) selected to cover the entire size range, in the child seating position representing the worst case most upright position and the most reclined position for this each dummy and impact orientation;.
If not yet covered by the previous configurations, the Technical Service may test the Enhanced Child Restraint Systems in a position defined by the Technical Service that it fits in the Vehicle Seat Fixture.

Anti rebound device for frontal, rear and lateral tests (item (g))

Item (g) on the anti rebound device acting on the vehicle seatback now starts with “For frontal, rear and lateral tests”. The device must still stay inside the seat fixture in one position. It may protrude beyond the Vehicle Seat Fixture in its adjusted position according to the user manual. Before, the text said “beyond the seat fixture” for the adjusted position.

An For frontal, rear and lateral tests an anti rebound device acting on the vehicle seatback shall stay inside the seat fixture in one position, but may protrude beyond the seat fixture Vehicle Seat Fixture in its adjusted position according to the user manual.

ISOFIX connector alignment, mass on the bar and Figure 8 (paras. 7.2.8. and 7.2.8.5.)

Paragraph 7.2.8. now says that the ISOFIX connectors are vertically aligned as shown in Figure 8. Before, it said they were aligned as shown in Figure 3. A mass of 5 kg must now be attached to the extremities of the bar. Before, a force of 50 ± 1 N had to be applied to the extremities of the bar. The former Figure 7 of paragraph 7.2.8.5. is renumbered as Figure 8.

The complete seat, or the component fitted with ISOFIX attachments (e.g. ISOFIX base) if it has a release button, is attached rigidly to a test rig in such a way that ISOFIX connectors are vertically aligned as shown in Figure 38. A 6 mm diameter bar, 350 mm long, shall be attached to the ISOFIX connectors. A force mass of 50 ± 1 N 5 kg shall be applied attached to the extremities of the bar.
