UN R129 — Supplement 5 to the 04 series of amendments
Supplement 4 → 5
- What changed
- Paragraph 7.1.3.6.: the examples of an Enhanced Child Restraint System that requires substantial modification for different sizes now include "when an insert is provided/removed".
- In that case, or if the size range covers more than 3 size ranges, a relevant intermediate dummy(ies) must also be tested.
- Why
- The proposal's aim is to clarify that the removal of an insert may also trigger additional tests with alternative dummy statures.
- The proposal says that at present it may not be clear that a "substantial change" may include the removal of an insert.
Q1What changed1 change
Substantial modification for different sizes: insert provided/removed (para. 7.1.3.6.)
The paragraph under the table in paragraph 7.1.3.6. covers an Enhanced Child Restraint System that requires substantial modification for different sizes. It also covers the case where the size range covers more than 3 size ranges. In these cases, a relevant intermediate dummy(ies) must be tested in addition to the dummy(ies) defined above. Before, the example in brackets was "convertible Enhanced Child Restraint System". The amendment adds the example "or when an insert is provided/removed". It also changes "cover" to "covers" in "if the size range covers more than 3 size ranges".

Removing an insert results in a new size range being determined.
Source
“Removing an insert results in a new size range being determined.”
In the proposal's example, a seat with a size range of 40-85 cm uses an insert with a size range of 40-60 cm. Without the insert, 61 to 85 cm remains, so the tests must also use Q1 as the smallest dummy for this new range.
Sources (3)
“For example, if the child seat has a size range of 40-85 cm, this seat uses an insert with a size range of 40-60 cm.”
“If the insert is removed, a size range of 61 to 85 cm remains.”
“This means that the tests must also be carried out with Q1 as the smallest dummy for this 'new' range.”
At present, it may not be clear that a "substantial change" may include the removal of an insert.
