UN R149 — Supplement 2 to the 01 series of amendments

Supplement 1 → 2

Adopted at the WP.29 191st sessionEntry into force 2024-06-15
What changed
  • New paragraph 5.3.2.10. allows the Driver Assistance Projection according to UN Regulation No. 48, paragraph 5.35., with the passing beam. It may be produced by modifying the passing-beam light distribution within a zone limited by vertical and horizontal angles.
  • Paragraph 5.3.3.8. now refers to paragraph 5.35. of UN Regulation No. 48 instead of paragraph 6.22.9.3.2.
  • Annex 1 has new items 9.2.10.7. and 9.2.10.8. on Driver Assistance Projection according to UN Regulation No. 48. They say whether the Adaptive driving-beam and the passing-beam may produce it.
Why
  • The proposal is intended to allow Driver Assistance Projection with the AFS passing beam, in addition to the Adaptive Driving Beam (ADB). Some Contracting Parties requested this.
  • Increased luminous intensity needs to be obtained on the road to reach sufficient contrast, especially for streets in cities equipped with street lighting.
  • Paragraph 5.3.3.8. is amended to refer to paragraph 5.35. instead of paragraph 6.22.9.3.2., and to make two editorial corrections.

Q1What changed11 changes

Driver Assistance Projection with the passing beam (paras. 5.3.2.10. and 5.3.2.10.1.)

Under new paragraph 5.3.2.10., the Driver Assistance Projection according to UN Regulation No. 48, paragraph 5.35., may be produced by modifying the passing-beam light distribution. The zone is limited by these angles: vertically - 1.2° and below, horizontally ± 25°. In this zone, the projection intensity must not exceed 2.15·10⁵ cd and must not be less than the minimum intensities in Table 7. Under new paragraph 5.3.2.10.1., the colour of the light emitted for Driver Assistance Projection must be white.

The Driver Assistance Projection according to UN Regulation No. 48, paragraph 5.35., may be produced by modifying the passing-beam light distribution within a zone limited by the following angles:

Reference and wording in paragraph 5.3.3.8.

Paragraph 5.3.3.8. is about the Driver Assistance Projection as part of the driving-beam light distribution. It now refers to UN Regulation No. 48, paragraph 5.35., instead of paragraph 6.22.9.3.2. In the sentence on modifying the beam pattern in the zone, the maximum value according to paragraph 5.1.4.2. is now written “(Imax)” instead of “(IM)”. The words “and not less than” now read “and not be less than”.

The Driver Assistance Projection according to UN Regulation No. 48, paragraph 6.22.9.3.25.35., may be part of the driving-beam light distribution within a zone limited by the following angles:
The Driver Assistance Projection may be produced by modifying the beam pattern in the zone defined above, where the luminous intensity in any point of the entire driving beam shall not exceed the maximum value (IMImax) according to paragraph 5.1.4.2. and not be less than the minimum intensities prescribed in Table 13 Part B.

Projection in the communication form (paras. 5.3.2.10.2. and 5.3.3.8.2., Annex 1, items 9.2.10.7. and 9.2.10.8.)

If a Driver Assistance Projection is approved as part of the passing-beam light distribution, the communication form in Annex 1 must indicate this (para. 5.3.2.10.2.). New paragraph 5.3.3.8.2. says the same for a Driver Assistance Projection approved as part of the driving-beam light distribution. New item 9.2.10.7. has a yes/no entry for whether the Adaptive driving-beam may produce Driver Assistance Projection according to UN Regulation No. 48. New item 9.2.10.8. gives the same yes/no entry for the passing-beam.

In case a Driver Assistance Projection is approved as part of the passing-beam light distribution an indication shall be made in the communication form in Annex 1.

Q2Why it changed

Proposed by
Experts from the International Automotive Lighting and Light-Signalling Expert Group (GTB) and experts from Germany
Working party
GRE, 88th session (April 2023)

Reasons

  • The proposal is intended to allow Driver Assistance Projection with the AFS passing beam, in addition to the Adaptive Driving Beam (ADB). Some Contracting Parties requested this.

    Source
“This proposal is intended to allow Driver Assistance Projection on the road surface by using the AFS passing beam, in addition to the current possibility to use the Adaptive Driving Beam (ADB), as requested by some Contracting Parties.”
  • Increased luminous intensity needs to be obtained on the road to reach sufficient contrast, especially for streets in cities equipped with street lighting. The intensity values are limited to Imax as prescribed for the driving beam.

“Increased luminous intensity needs to be obtained on the road, in order to reach sufficient contrast, especially for the streets in cities equipped with street lighting.”
“The intensity values are limited to Imax as prescribed for driving-beam.”
  • The requirements of new paragraph 5.3.2.10. are inspired from the ones for the Adaptive Driving Beam. The allowed maximum is the Imax of the driving beam, to keep consistency with Driver Assistance Projection produced in the frame of ADB.

    Sources (2)
“It contains the technical requirements for producing the Driver Assistance Projection, inspired from the ones in the frame of Adaptive Driving Beam”
“Imax of driving-beam) to keep consistency with Driver Assistance Projection produced in the frame of ADB.”
  • Paragraph 5.3.3.8. is amended to refer to paragraph 5.35. instead of paragraph 6.22.9.3.2., and to make two editorial corrections.

  • Proposer's reason (informal document GRE-88-09)

Headlamps may be able to produce Driver Assistance Projection according to UN Regulation No. 48 if they meet the relevant UN Regulation No. 149 requirements. The proposal adds this information to the communication form in Annex 1 to give a clear statement whether the headlamp approval includes this ability.

Submitted by Experts from Germany. Working party adoption: ECE/TRANS/WP.29/GRE/88, para. 31.

    Sources (2)
“Headlamps may be able to produce Driver Assistance Projection according to UN Regulation No. 48 if the pertinent requirements of UN Regulation No. 149 are fulfilled.”
“In order to have a clear statement whether the approval of the headlamp include this ability or not it is proposed to integrate this information in the communication form in Annex 1 of UN Regulation No. 149.”
