UN R148 Supplement 2 (01 series) · UNECE Regulation No. 148 (ECE R148) — Uniform provisions concerning the approval of light-signalling devices (lamps) for power-driven vehicles and their trailers.

UN R148 — Supplement 2 to the 01 series of amendments

Supplement 1 → 2

Adopted at the WP.29 192nd sessionEntry into force 2024-09-22
What changed
  • For all other lamps, Annex 8, paragraph 1.2.2. now allows measurement after photometric stability has occurred, as an alternative to after 30 minutes of operation.
  • In Table 8, the maximum value for direction indicators of categories 11a, 11b and 11c is now 1.20∙10³ cd instead of 1.20∙10² cd.
  • Paragraph 5.7.7. now says when the light of the rearmost side marker lamp can be red instead of amber.
Why
  • Stabilization may occur in less than 30 minutes, depending on thermodynamic characteristics of the lamp; then there would be no need to wait longer.
  • The maximum value for categories 11a, 11b and 11c in Table 8 became 120 cd by mistake; it should be 1,200 cd.
  • Text on the colour of side marker lamps combined with any of the rearmost functions was missing from paragraph 5.7.7.

Q1What changed10 changes

Measurement after photometric stability (Annex 8, para. 1.2.2.)

For all other lamps, the luminous intensities are measured after 1 min and either after 30 minutes of operation or after photometric stability has occurred. These luminous intensities must comply with the minimum and maximum requirements. The luminous intensity distribution after 1 min of operation may be calculated from the distribution after 30 min of operation or after photometric stabilization. The ratio of luminous intensities measured at HV, used at each test point for this calculation, has the same two options. Before this supplement, the measurement and the calculation used the time after 30 minutes of operation.

For all other lamps, the luminous intensities measured after 1 min and eitherafter 30 minutes of operation shall comply with the minimum and maximum requirements.

Maximum value for direction indicators of categories 11a, 11b and 11c (Table 8)

In Table 8, the maximum value for direction indicators of categories 11a, 11b and 11c is now 1.20∙10³ cd. Before this supplement, it was 1.20∙10² cd. For category 11c, the value 4,00∙10² is now written 4.00∙10².

Red light of the rearmost side marker lamp (para. 5.7.7.)

The colour of the light emitted must be amber. However, it can now be red “if the rearmost side marker lamp is grouped or combined or reciprocally incorporated with the rear position lamp, the rear end-outline marker lamp, the rear fog lamp, the stop lamp, or is grouped with or has part of the light emitting surface in common with the rear retro-reflector”. Before this supplement, paragraph 5.7.7. did not have this sentence.

The colour of the light emitted shall be amber. However, it can be red, if the rearmost side marker lamp is grouped or combined or reciprocally incorporated with the rear position lamp, the rear end-outline marker lamp, the rear fog lamp, the stop lamp, or is grouped with or has part of the light emitting surface in common with the rear retro-reflector.

Renumbered paragraphs 3.3.1.1.1. and 3.3.1.2.

Paragraph 3.3.1.2. becomes paragraph 3.3.1.1.1. and paragraph 3.3.1.3. becomes paragraph 3.3.1.2.

3.3.1.3.3.3.1.2.

End of the voltage marking list (para. 3.3.4.4.)

In paragraph 3.3.4.4., item (d) “Non-replaceable light sources” now ends with a full stop instead of “; and/or”. This list gives the cases in which lamps must bear marking of the rated voltage(s) or the range of voltage.

Q2Why it changed

Proposed by
Informal Working Group on Simplification of Lighting and Light-Signalling Regulations (IWG SLR); experts from the International Automotive Lighting and Light-Signalling Expert Group (GTB)
Working party
GRE, 89th session (October 2023)

Reasons

  • Depending on the thermodynamic characteristics of the lamp, stabilization may occur in less than 30 minutes. In such a case, there would be no need to wait longer.

“Depending on thermodynamic characteristics of the lamp, the stabilization may occur in less than 30 minutes. In such a case there would be no need to wait for more time.”
  • The proposed solution is intended to align the start of measurements between UN Regulations Nos. 148 and 149. With the parallel amendment to UN Regulation No. 48, it will also allow a measurement after a defined time which is at least 5 minutes.

  • During the conversion to scientific notation, the maximum value for categories 11a, 11b and 11c in Table 8 became 120 cd (1.20∙10²) by mistake. It should be 1,200 cd (1.20∙10³).

“while it should be 1,200 cd (i.e. 1.20∙103)”
  • In paragraph 5.7.7., some text on the colour of side marker lamps (SML) when combined with any of the rearmost functions was missing. The reinserted text is taken from paragraph 5.7.4. of the original series of amendments to UN Regulation No. 148.

  • The structure of paragraph 3.3.1.2. was aligned with UN Regulation No. 149, and the following paragraph was renumbered accordingly. Superfluous words at the end of paragraph 3.3.4.4. were removed, as a purely editorial correction.
