UN R148 — Supplement 7 to the 01 series of amendments
Supplement 6 → 7
- What changed
- The scope of the Regulation now includes front and rear direction indicator projectors (DPF and DPR), with requirements in new paragraph 5.13.
- Outside of the projection area defined by UN Regulation No. 48, the projector must fulfil one of the two conditions of paragraph 5.13.1.2.
- The colour of light emitted by the direction indicator projector must be amber.
- Why
- The direction indicator projection proposal aims to enhance the perception of the vehicle's signals by other road users.
- Complementary updates to UN Regulation No. 148 are required for appropriate device performance permissions and limitations.
- The maximum limit for direction indicator projection takes the existing 12,000 cd limit of a Category F3 front fog lamp, an already known value.
Q1What changed41 changes
Direction indicator projectors in the scope and in Tables 1 and 2 (para. 1.)
The scope list in paragraph 1. now includes direction indicator projectors. The entry “Reversing projectors” no longer ends with a full stop. Table 1 adds the front direction indicator projector (DPF) and the rear direction indicator projector (DPR), both under paragraph 5.13. In Table 2, both projectors have the change index “-” for the 00 series and “0” for the 01 series.
Light inside and outside of the projection area (paras. 5.13., 5.13.1.1. and 5.13.1.2.(a))
New paragraph 5.13. gives the requirements for the direction indicator projector (DPF and DPR). Paragraph 5.13.1.1. sets a maximum intensity of light emitted within the projection area defined by UN Regulation No. 48. This limit applies in any mounting position specified by the applicant. Outside of the projection area, one of the two conditions (a) and (b) of paragraph 5.13.1.2. must be fulfilled. Under condition (a), direct light towards the side, front or rear of the vehicle must not exceed a limit within a defined angular field. The vertical angles of this field depend on the mounting height.
Test together with the direction indicator lamp (paras. 3.1.2.10. and 5.13.1.2.(b))
Condition (b) of paragraph 5.13.1.2. applies when the apparent surfaces of the projector and the direction indicator lamp are arranged in one of two ways. Either their projection in the direction of the reference axis occupies not less than 60 per cent of the smallest circumscribing quadrilateral. Or the minimum distance between their facing edges does not exceed 75 mm, measured perpendicularly to the reference axis. In these cases, the projector must be tested together with the direction indicator lamp. The integrated luminous intensity must not exceed the maximum luminous intensity required in Table 8 of the relevant direction indicator lamp. For such a projector, new paragraph 3.1.2.10. lists drawings of the relative position of the projector and the lamp, and the measurement report.
Reduced intensity, colour and other requirements (paras. 5.13.1.3. to 5.13.7.)
Paragraph 5.13.1.3. allows a reduced maximum luminous intensity to fulfil the requirement in paragraph 5.37.4. of UN Regulation No. 48. The related indication must be made in the communication form in Annex 1. The colour of light emitted must be amber (para. 5.13.7.). Paragraphs 5.13.2., 5.13.3., 5.13.5. and 5.13.6. state no requirement. These paragraphs cover minimum luminous intensity within the angles of geometric visibility, minimum or maximum area of apparent surface, additional specific requirements and failure provisions. For measurement, paragraph 5.13.4. states no additional requirement.
Direction indicator projector in the communication form (Annex 1, item 9.1.8.)
The list of lamps in the communication form in Annex 1 now includes the direction indicator projector. New item 9.1.8. has entries for the front and the rear direction indicator projector. Items 9.1.8.1.1. and 9.1.8.2.1. record yes or no for testing together with the front or rear direction indicator lamp. Items 9.1.8.1.2. and 9.1.8.2.2. record yes or no for an intended reduction of the luminous intensity of the projector.

Reasons
The projection of patterns on the road is intended to enhance the perception of the vehicle's signals by other road users. The proposer states that several studies have shown the effectiveness of the projection.

The direction indicator projection is proposed as a new light-signalling function in UN Regulation No. 48. Complementary updates to UN Regulation No. 148 are also required for appropriate device performance permissions and limitations.

“Therefore, it is proposed as a new light signalling function in UN Regulation No. 48 to ensure appropriate usage permissions and limitations.”
“Complementary updates to UN Regulation No. 148 are also required, to ensure appropriate device performance permissions and limitations.”
Higher intensity of light on the road surface allows better recognition of a projected pattern. However, a maximum limit is required to prevent excessive reflections. To avoid creating unique limits, the proposal takes the existing 12,000 cd limit for a Category F3 front fog lamp, an already known value.

“To avoid creating unique limits, the existing limit of 12,000 cd for a front fog lamp of Category F3 is proposed as a maximum limit for direction indicator projection, as this is an already known value.”
The direction indicator projector may be installed in any location of the vehicle if it is invisible to other road users. Alternatively, a projector visible to other road users may be permitted if its installation complies with the requirements for single lamps. In this case, the projector is tested in combination with the related light-signalling device, to make sure it meets the requirements of the corresponding lamp. Outside of the projection zone, the intensity is limited by the maximum intensity of the related light-signalling device when both are switched ON.

“Alternatively, it may be permitted for the direction indicator projector to be visible to other road users if its installation complies with the requirements of paragraph 5.7.2., single lamps.”
“In this case, to ensure the compliance with the requirements of the corresponding lamp, the projector shall be tested in combination with the related light-signalling device”
“Outside of the projection zone, the intensity is limited by the maximum intensity of the related light-signalling device when both the related light-signalling device and projector are switched ON.”
Direction indicator projection is restricted under adverse weather conditions. After at least two minutes of continuous wiper operation, the proposal switches the projection OFF or reduces its intensity to or below a threshold. The chosen threshold refers to the maximum allowed luminous intensity of segment 10 and below for the AFS headlamp in adverse weather condition mode. This mode is defined in UN Regulation No. 149, 01 series of amendments.
